Bicep - Deadlift Problem

This started about 6 weeks ago.
As soon as I get to the top of a heavy deadlift, or close to the top, my left bicep feels a really sharp pain, through the lower part of the inner head(an inch or two above the elbow crease.). I dont think its a tear, because i have no problem training biceps, no pain whatsoever..

But everytime i pull a heavy weight off the ground, or even from knee height, as im approaching the top or at the top, sharp pulling...

any idea what this is?

I've heard some horror stories from guys using mixed grip. Its far too easy to tear your biceps with an underhand grip.
Your bicep is a small muscle. Imagine trying to support 400, 500 even 600lbs.
I would reccommend using an overhand grip with straps.
I'm sure many won't agree, but I feel that this will lead to far less injuries.

you might try using some glucosamine or other joint lubbing supplement. It could be your joint??????

Agree

I would concur with D. From what I've read on here at least, the double overhand with straps does seem to incur a lot less injuries.

One thought with injuries and the over/under grip though- part of the problem may also be not letting the arms "hang" from the shoulders enough though. It's very natural for the shoulders to shrug up at the beginning of the lift and the arm with the under-grip to not fully "hang" but instead flex due to the stretch reflex.

dante is a big believer in doing double overhand with straps. i was a mixed grip deadlifter until i saw a few videos of the bicep rolling up a person's arm as it tore and then i switched right away. no more bicep pain for me. it will take a little bit to get used to the double overhand, but it shouldn't be too bad. better safe than sorry.

thanks for all the responses.

i dont think its the joint, the pain is in the muscle belly itself. and i do take a lot of joint supplements, thanks buddy. :)

I actually thought that it could be it, but even when i started keeping my triceps flexed hard throughout the movement.. still pain.

funny thing, i used to be straps only.. double over hand with straps. i switched about 8 months ago, and id never been happier deadlifting. new weights came flying up, form was better, forearm development came up a LOT. but if this continues, i may just have to go back to straps...

so you were going mixed with straps?

sorry, i was asking about now. when you switched from double overhand to straps did you switch to a mixed grip with or without straps?

oh sorry.. i misunderstood.

without straps. and i must say, it feels a lot better.. aside from the bicep issue LOL.

i've experimented going mixed with straps and that always bugged my bicep more than mixed with no straps. i am not sure why, thought that maybe this might have been the thing with you which is why i asked if you used straps or no straps with the mixed grip

mixed grip, sorry about that. left hand being the one that is palms under.

you answered your own question. i like mixed grip better also because i can pull more weight and it feels more natural compared to double over hand with straps. now i only do double overhand with straps. the deadlift has suffered but better than a torn bicep.

smaller radius bar with hook grip

or use straps

then dont go all the way to the top to lock out,,,do partials then,,,

if you dont like it either way come back 2 months later after a break,

bumping

hate to bump up my own oldish thread, but i have started using straps for deadlift, double overhand grip. and on heavy sets, at the top/getting close to lockout/full lockout, i get that burning/tingling/REALLY HARD pulling in the left, inner head.. in the previous place on the bicep. (left bicep). even with double over hand, and straps, im feeling this.. any ideas?

how wide are your hands? do you start with the bar close to your shins. Your arms should just be hooks. If you're getting a sharp pain at the top with a double overhand grip, it could be because you are pulling with your arms right before lockup to finish out the rep. just what i can gather from what you're describing.

bar cuts shins up going up, arms are completely straight, triceps flexed. i powerlifted for a few years, my deadlift form is fine. its almost as if its a deadly painful stretch in the lower part of the inner head of the left bicep..

maybe go to the doc and check for a muscle tear, or partial tendon seperation??? not a situation ive heard of tho... just my opinion bro.

thanks brother.

thats what i was thinking.. some type of partial muscle tear.. except for the fact that it only happens during deadlifts. i can train biceps no problem.. who knows. i do plan on getting to the doc for an mri to check it out asap. thanks brother.
