The Big radio station for N.Ireland BBC radio Ulster came to my gym Saturday past for a interview about the sport of Bodybuilding and the lifestyle we follow. The repoter was a nice girl who seemed very intrested in what we do, the interveiw was all possitive regards bodybuilding and is due to go one air in the next week or so, FinePhysique was on hand to say a few words along with other gym members. A good day was had by all I think(hope), she did trow in a question about gear in bodybuilding, however I had a professional answer. So all in all I think it went well.

Did you notice she seemed genuinely shocked that we bodybuilders were not crazy extremists?

I would say she would have been more shocked if Michelle and Lyne were not there.

I would say we changed her views on bodybuilding my good friend. It will be good to here it live.

Good stuff,

let me know when it's on because I'd be interested to hear it.

Do you think I could get it on the BBC website? I dont think we receive BBC ulster since I'm from down south.

We now only need to change a few 1000 more peoples view in fermanagh and we will be onto a winner.

On a side note I was impressed at the level of conditioning you have held 7 weeks on.

When I was in Ireland in 1992 and asked some garda we were with in Dublin where I could go to lift weights, they looked at me askance and suggested that gyms were where homos went to meet.

That took me aback, as I was from USA and most athletes lifted weights and worked out regularly. I don't think that steroids or bodybuilding was big at all in Ireland when the USA was making steroids controlled substances in 1990 or thereabouts. What has changed?

hahaha....I can't believe that's what the Garda said to you! Hilarious!

The difference nowadays is that people in Ireland are, economically, a lot better off and hence have more money and time to spend on Gym membership, supplements (and juice, for some) etc etc. There are new Gyms opening up all the time over here.

It's still not as widespread as the U.S. though and many still view bodybuilders as not quite playing with a full deck. It's not extremely rare to meet someone who lifts weights regularly, but outside of your own gym it's rare to meet people who are genuinely huge.

Most peoples social activities in Ireland still revolves around drinking. Unfortunately the economic success also means people have more money to spend on booze.

I heard that the price of a bottle of Budweiser is 6.5 euros and that's approx $10, which is what you pay for 18 bottles when on sale at the store in USA. I heard, as a result, a lot of ppl are going to liquor store and drinking at home and then going out after getting drunk at home. This, I heard, is somewhat hampering the social aspect of the Irish pub. I also heard that due to economic prosperity there are a lot of rec drugs, hard drugs, in Ireland, unlike before. I heard that the smoking ban did not hamper the pub life but that the cost of drinks has hampered pub life. True? I remember in 1992, I was 21, and did not like guinness at first. Then I was slamming them down (to my shame). We were paying approx 3.5 Irish pounds per pint then which, with the exchange rate then (1.8) was approx $6 pint. Then, when I got back to USA, we were paying $3 per pint for Guinness every bit as good as the Guinness in Ireland (In 1992 in USA only authentic Irish bars, frequented by Irish immigrants, served Guinness -- whereas, today, all do so). So we were paying half price here for something imported from Ireland. Or, put another way, we paid twice as much in Ireland for Guinness, which is brewed domestically in Ireland.
