Started playing Bioshock 2 that I bought off of Steam. Some noted out of box problems, especially when purchased through Steam. I ran into a few crash problems on X64 of Vista, and debugged it all the way through. The main culprit was xlive.dll, which I will expand on further. If yours will not run, and crashes every time you try to run it, do the following:
1. Download the newest video drivers straight from the chipset maker, NOT the vender if at all possible. In other words, don't use Dell drivers for an nVidia chipset. Go to nvidia.com or ati.com, depending on your chipset and download the newest.
2. Download and install the newest audio drivers. Yes there are crash problems due to old audio drivers, so you will need to refresh them with the newest.
3. Run Microsoft Update, and install the newest support fixes.
4. Most of all, as mentioned, I kept crashing due to xlive.dll. What they don't tell you is that this game needs the Games For Windows Live client installed. Yup, they failed to metnion that and Steam does not install it for you, so the game WILL crash every time. Then once you install it and get the game to run, you will need to create yourself, yet another account on Windows Live to give you the ability to save the game AND unlock it with the serial. What a pain in the ass, but the game is worth it.
