Blood Donation

So my hematocrit is a bit high at 49 and I am running bold cyp so I went in to give blood and my iron was “really high “ the nurse said .Maybe 80 if I remember anyway she suggested I do a power blood donation. It is similar to a whole blood donation, except a machine is used to allow you to safely donate two units of red blood cells during one donation while returning your plasma and platelets. So I did but the only downside is you can only do this every 4 months instead of 2 with regular blood donations. My question ,for those with some medical knowledge, is this the way to go with my goal of lowering hematocrit or should I just stick to every 2 months with a regular donation?

Was this at a Red Cross or similar? Did you have an actual veinpuncture (blood draw) or a finger prick?

If the latter, they didn't check your "Iron levels" rather your hemoglobin. If so, theses phelbotomists erroneously believe hemoglobin and iron are one-in-the same. Coincidentally, it's not their fault per se, as their misinformed instructors pass off this incorrectly.

It may be possible that she said "18" rather than "80". As 18g/dL is mildly above range for hemoglobin. 80g/dL you more than likely would not of made it to the Blood bank alive.

On the other hand, 80µg/dL for a serum iron panel is about mid-range. Perfectly fine.

Edit: was your hematocrit measured via blood draw? If so, your hemoglobin should be 16.3 respectively.

Hey Stewie The hemo was tested at my dr a few weeks ago The finger prick at red cross and it was to test my iron.

my hemoglobin runs high normally so and it actually helps me more to donate "Double platelets" on a machine they call an "ALYX" machine.
I'm O- so i donate as often as possible anyway , those fuckers would drain me dry if they could.!!!

I have donated at the Red Cross when I lived in NY and the finger prick they do is to test hematocrit.

Ok. First things first, they absolutely with a 100% certainty did not check your iron. They checked your hemoglobin. The Red Cross isn't equipped to check your iron levels. I've posted on this a few times before.

Think hemoglobin:)

Nevertheless, an 18 on a finger prick isn't high. Nor is a hematocrit of 49.

Take a look through this thread.

Ur best bet is to do a double red cell donation, they usually want universal donors and will at times turn u down if ur type isn't in need,

Jesus when did 49 hematocrit become "run down and donate right away!"?

In range is in range....most labs its 42 to 53

Cleveland clinic its 40-55

If on your bloodwork your ALT came back at 37 on the range of 10-40 would you run out and tell your doctor you want to get a liver biopsy?

^^thats what i thought.if i donate every 2 months mine stays around 47.had not donated in 7 months it jumped to 54 in a short time, surprised pretty fast.t

My hemo was 55 and my cardiologist said it's not a big deal at all as long as I'm active and eat healthy. He said it's not even a concern until it's closer to 60.

Give as often as you can and check it regularly most times I have to stop using for a while to keep my levels in good range.

Ok I called them and it was 18 hemoglobin test they did , which I dont know is trure but the guy said it is pretty much like an iron test and with that number they have a chart to convert it to hematocrit.

Stewie the hematocrit was a blood draw

Anyway I fell great and highly recommend doing double red blood cell donation.

I went to a hospital in Brooklyn to give blood recently and they pricked my finger as well and told me my iron was almost above the range to even be allowed to donate? So that means they had no idea what they were talking about? Because I know my iron was high a year ago. I have high iron from taking vitamins. Just started getting it a few years ago, never had the problem before. I cut out the Beverly ultra 40 and hopefully that was the problem coupled with vitamin C.

How much will one blood draw bring ones hemo or RBC count down.

hematocrit about 3 points

thats nothing. why even bother?

That is alot actually....almost all those 37 cyclists that died from EPO usage years back had low 60's hematocrit.....yet there have been tons of bodybuilders in this forum who have had hematocrit 57, 58 and 59.

55 and youll be cuttoff of TRT by a TRT doctor....52 you are still in range

Hey Dog are there other ways to lower it without stopping supplementation? I know mine isnt that much if any out of range but I would rather it be in the middle to low end.

Do cardio 6 days a week, and give blood, and take IP6....thats about it as I know of it

Is simply going for a walk, around the block a few times enough to cut it, or do we need to have our hearts pacing at a higher rate like a light jog?

Get the heart rate up.
