Blood pressure while training legs

As I've progressed up into heavier leg training (ie 450lb machine squats for reps atg- just as a measure of how heavy we're talking) I've began to notice a large spike in blood pressure. To the point where I almost have to cut my leg training short.

So with that said i have question for those knowledgeable on bp meds.

Is there a medication that I can use only on leg days to lower blood pressure without negatively impacting performance? I have absolutely zero knowledge on bp meds so this might be a very dum question to some of you.

Thanks

you could try supplements that increase blood flow to lower your BP, e.g. cialis, citrullin, arginine etc.
proper breathing helps alot with those spikes. Excersise selection is another important one.
If you for example have the choice between a 45° leg press and a horizontal one, chose the horizontal one.
you could also switch to unilateral excersises to ease the load and in return the spike

Snag some 1 gram sodium tabs - take 45 min prior to training + 16 ounces of water

Increased sodium + hydration = increased blood volume = more stable heart rate during high load or transference of profusion training.

wouldnt this increase BP spikes even more?

Are you sure it is the blood pressure spiking and not dropping???

It’s counterintuitive 100%.

Sodium is hands down the greatest performance enhancing drug on this planet, I can typically directly correlate performance changes to my sodium intake prior to caffeine administration or glycogen levels.

Speaking in generalities, typically under heavy load blood pressure tends to drop - then in a cyclical approach will spike shortly there after.

Already taking 5mg cialis someday, don't find it makes a difference honestly.

Not going to lie, breathing is probably not the best- hard to breathe when pushing that kind of load (heavy for me anyways). So you're probably right on that one.

Actually already do this. We'll, not sodium tabs but 1/4 teaspoon pink salt in my shake about an hour pre workout.

Also heavily salt all my meals and consume at least a gallon a day of fluids easily.

Maybe bp is actually dropping. All I know is after squats then leg press my head is just pounding.

I will have to check after my next workout

Bloodpressure needs to spike up during repetition of the lift, that's how the muscle get supplied with all that sweet oxygen. But it should drop back to normal very quickly. Like 200 systolic during a heavy squat would be an expected value. It should go down below 130 after your last rep though. Those spikes are actually good and why cardiologist do recommend hard exercise to control BP.

I'd not worry about the BP during lifting tbh. I'd worry about chronic Hypertension a lot more, would keep an eye on your resting BP measured 3-4 times a day for a week to see where you're at. But to answer your question, I think it mostly depends on the dose of the BP Med. If it brings your back to normal levels, it should not fuck with your workouts at all, maybe even improve them a little. If you need a lot, then it might start to impact output a little bit. Telmisartan gets a lot of love in BB Circles, you could give that one a try.

1/4 tsp pre workout is a baby amount. Thats only ~600mg sodium. I do almost 4x that amount. Try to gradually increase this and see what happens.

Are you taking a BP reading mid workout?

My bp is always normal 110-120/ 60ish. Check it daily. So I don't want to add something in for everyday bp control as then I'd be dropping too low.

The only reason I'm concerned about blood pressure during legs is really because of the pounding headache. After squats and leg press I need to sit around for 12 minutes or so before I can continue on.

I just assumed this feeling I was feeling was high blood pressure.

I'll monitor this next week at the gym and see if it's actually my bp spiking

I thought 2.4 grams of pink sea salt was a decent amount. I'll definitely increase that then!

And no, I haven't checked bp mid workout. I'm going to do that next week and come back and update this thread. Maybe that's not even my problem. I just automatically assumed it was the cause for the pounding head

110-120 to 60 is picture perfect, especially for being on Gear, impressive! Wouldn't fuck with any BP Meds if you don't need to.

That sounds more like an exertion headache. I tend to get those when I am neglecting my water and mineral intake. Do you sweat a lot when you workout? Are you a salty sweater? Did you drink enough before and during the workout, and get enough salt?

I'd talk with a doc if it doesn't go away though. Do you get headaches not related to lifting/strenuous activities?

Valid point. Haven't actually checked. Just feel a pounding in my head.

I was experiencing similar symptoms once , decide to take 25mg Viagra the next leg day and it was WAY WAY worse
Come to find out I was slightly dehydrated (training first thing in the morning) and causing lower blood volume making for low blood pressure. When the legs would be pumped it was starving everything else.
I'd definitely check it before trying to take something

Higher blood pressure is normal during weightlifting especially during a heavy lift. 320/250+ is normal. I would make sure to breath correctly to keep from having the pressure be more then needed. From what i have read Cialis etc. will only change BP in the single digit range. You can check your BP while lifting to see what it is doing and tell any that ask that you are trying a new workout routine!

i feel like if blood pressure was the cause of the pounding headaches that you feel during your leg workouts... we would be having a lot more people encountering this issue.
