I believe "The Zone" by Barry Sears is worth the read, although the application is different. Dr. Sears is the one who brought the Glycemic Index, Inflammation, and EFAs into the spotlight with regards to diet. I would say ALL modern athletic nutritionists are influenced by his research.
Dr. Sears (a biochemist), proved through controlled studies on high level athletes that he could improve performance though diet. If you read my post on eicosanoids, that is where it came from. Eicosanoids are perhaps the most important factor controlled through diet, they effect all aspects of the body.
