Both RAM slots are full already?

Just picked up a Toshiba A665-S6089. It comes with 4 gigs of RAM pre-installed. It's expandable to 8gigs. Bought another 4gig of Ram. When I opened the cover to install the the other 4 gigs both slots ( i believe) were already taken up. Does this mean I have to send back the 4gig and get a 8 gig? How do I know if there is a empty slot there and I am just not seeing it?

I guess it has 2 x 2gb modules in the laptop currently. Laptops only have 2 slots. Desktop computers generally have at least 4 slots.

You have 2 options.

Take 1 of the modules out and replace it with the 4gb of ram and you will have 6gb of ram total. It's generally recommended though to use the same ram in both slots.

Buy another 1 x 4gb ram and swap both modules out.

Unless your doing some intense computing applications the 4gb in there already should be plenty. What do you use this computer for?

What operating system are you using? If you are not using 64 bit version of Windows or Enterprise 32bit version of Windows Server, it will not utilize over 4GB of RAM unless PAE is enabled, and that does not allow for applications to use the space UNLESS the application is coded for it, sort of like a RAM disk. Essentially most of your applications you use will not, so it may be a waste for you to try it anyway.

BOOMSHAKER, the laptop ships with Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit edition so Windows 7 64 bit will see 16GB RAM maximum and the laptop supports a max of 8GB RAM.

My question to you is this: Why do you think it needs more than 4GB of RAM?
Are you doing extensive video editing such as using Adobe Premiere® Pro CS5 or other software that's a resource hog?

If it were my laptop, the best bang for the buck to increase the laptops speed (this is true of any pc/mac) is to upgrade the hard drive to a faster one!

Your Toshiba ships with a 500GB 5400 rpm hard drive, I would upgrade that to a 7200 rpm hard drive of the same size and you WILL notice the speed difference doing nothing else to the laptop....... NOTE TO ALL: The slowest thing in any modern pc is the hard drive. As we've always said - hard drives access data over 100 times SLOWER than any other part of the pc. So get the fastest hard drive you can afford, in your Toshiba laptop this will be a 7200rpm drive.
