I bounced clubs in NY and CT for about 10 years back in the late 80s and 90s.I find myself reminiscing from time to time on what a great time it was !!!!I know it was a great gig to have back then ( slammin music , hotties everywhere and not too much as far as fighting goes ) and plenty of time to train the following day after the flavor of the night left . Is working clubs still like that ? do bouncers now have to worry about getting shot or stabbed walking out to the car ? Gang violence ? What is it like now because obviously I don't get out much !!!!!

Damn well kinda more serious nowadays where I live in so cal I bounce from bars to clubs under the table stuff is all im into. Its kinda the same vibe.

Over here in UK its getting shite! Used to be quite fun back when I first started 10 years ago, now depending on what venue/area your in it can get a little "busy" we had a few issues past couple of weeks, stabbings and gang wars, i gues it's different depending on where your from etc

well depends where you work....a ghetto club in Harlem or a high end club in downtown

Its a VERY dangerous position in most places in the world. I have several friends who bounce,,,and Ive lost a few. A close child hood friend was shot in his back and killed escorting a man out of the club. Like everything else you just need to plan and prepare to be as careful as possible and expect any type of situation.

Absolutely! Well said

Used to be fun and games odd few brawls but it would always get sorted, these days the youngsters are either drugged up pills/sniff/booze and cause issues then when they get a good old beat dwn they turn up wth gangs. It's usually ok but in this day n age things are not as they wer. Mis the old days.... Are you guys in the states "licensed"

A local bouncer here is in jail for shooting a peace of shit guy trying to bum rush into the club. The story is the bouncer watched him pull a gun. The bouncer pulled his and plugged the kid and then a group of ghetto people surrounded the shot kid and made off with his gun. So the bouncer is in jail for murder charges when it sounds like the bouncer defended himself yet evidence was stolen making him out to be the bad guy. What ever the case the bouncer is fucked for a job making what $10-30 an hour. I used to want tombounce but was turned off by the risk.

When I bounced 10 years ago it was very violent on hip hop night especially. Always violent fights. But we had gansta rappers at our club. When Too Short was there I kept my back to the wall the whole time. I never let anyone get behind me as a rule. The night my knee was destroyed I had two choices:
1. Let my friend get popped in the face and take out the guy who was coming up behind me.
2. Take the guy down who had a free shot at my friend's face but leave my back vulnerable.
I'd make the same choice again even though some local bad ass swept my left knee from behind as I had the weight of myself, my friend, and the guy I had by the throat, all on my left leg which at the time and still currently has a detached ACL. My knee cap was totally torn off and about 4 inches above my leg. I was completely vulnerable during the big fight that ensueded. One of my buddies nearly snapped the guy's neck that hurt me. I honestly thought his neck was going to snap.
The next week the club was shot up in a drive by. Sonehow the shooters missed all the patrons.
I ran with a hardcore crowd back then. It's a miracle I made it through.
After I had my knee surgery I needed money and was living in my car so I ended up bouncing alone at a bar that Hell's Angels marked as theirs. I knew I couldn't fight with my knee so I got as huge as I possibly could to prevent issues. I was always extremely respectful to the bikers. When I saw a bad ass at any club I worked at after that I made sure to introduce myself to the obvious leader, and befriend them. You'd be surprised how those who are looked at as bad, and who very terrible things, will go out of their way to protect a friend. I found this with gang members as well. You respect them, and they return the favor, even more so than your traditional "good person."

Very very true, most "good" guys are scared of their own shadow and will turn their back pretending they didn't see shit when youre in a bad situation. The boys who live that life, if they respect you will gladly take matters in their own hands. There's more I could say but its not for these boards.

I know this thread is sympathizing with bouncers but there are also a LOT of asshole bouncers who abuse their power and treat guys like 3rd class peasants and also don't let any guys into the club unless they spend 1k minimum for one bottle of vodka. It's a big risk to try to go to a club in NYC because you really don't know if you'll be allowed in. Odds are you wont.

I was the door man at a comedy club when I was 18 . Carding people when i was not even old enough to drink! It was great never had to kick anyone out . I had free drinks when the club closed. My brother was one of the bar tenders. Hotties galore. Those were the days. I havent been to a club in probaly 10 years, and I don't miss it.

I bounced at a hip hop clubs and upscale strip clubs in new York in the 90's. the strip club was easy and I still talk to guys who there and its still an overall safe gig. the hip hop club was a nightmare. there were multiple fights there every night.

funny shit...
lol

bounced for many years on and off in many different places.

funny how places can change with time.

one of the first places I REALLY worked was in a place kinda known for fighting, guns n knives not as common but druken brawls were the norm. lol

I went backand worked at that place for a night like 8-10 years after that n what a turn around! full of cameras and NO insanity! so sad...

things seem to change and get all soft n cupcakey... I know most people like it, but I don't. lol I miss shady old smoke filled places with scary people and fights popping off! lol

after being in a place with lots of fights Miami nightlife seemed tame... except for hip hop nights!lol shootings, stabbigns and all kinds of bs...

when things did pop off there, what a difference!
undercover cops coming out of the wood work like Miami vice! lol

glad Im not doing it anymore! lol

I figured it got bad at this day and age.I remember throwing down and when it was done it was done.Nowadays it seems everyone is a sore loser and of no character. To come back with a gun or knife or worse 20 of your friends , just plain cowardly. I've always tried to talk my way out of an altercation first showing patience and respect. Some people would rather get taught a lesson.

I did security for 10 years in my downtown. Did private security for Young Money and Kid Rock when they would come to town. I have no desire to ever bounce in clubs again. It was great cash but id rather have drinks with friends or pretty much anything else than bounce again. It had its place and time in my 20s but I've outgrown it. Been in more street fights and club fights and "bouncer fights" than I can count. The stories I could tell... haha

As someone who has bartended for a while, I am happy to be behind the bar and not at the door/in the crowd bouncing. A lot of risk/responsibility for what I would say is not enough pay (for what you're doing). Obviously physical safety is the biggest risk, but with today's 'suing' culture, you've even got to be careful about how you handle people...you can legally get into a whole mess pretty easily.

Bartending by now is the same way too...some pretty hefty ramifications if you serve someone who is visibly intoxicated. Back in the day it was just a dumbass's fault for drinking more than he could handle...but these days if he winds up in the ER, he can sue the bartender who over-served him for medical expenses + grievances. In the same way, if some dumbass is making a scene or threatening people and you throw him out and he gets injured in the process, he can come after you fairly easily.

Different depending on where you do it though. Clubs can be very rough. If you manage to swing a decent gig at a dive bar or somewhere else where generally decent people congregate, it's likely your best bet. Lots of testosterone and pride at clubs in my experience lol.

the thing is unless you are paid proper, which you know doesn't happen in new kinda corporate places. bouncing is really an entrepreneurial position! lol

gotta be creative!

no fucking way im standing around dealing with that shit for 10 bucks n hour! lol

if you don't pay security properly, you really don't have security, unless you don't fuck with them n let them do there thing!lol

I just quit my job in Seattle because it sucks now. Bouncing used to be fun but nowadays people are violent disrespectful shitbags!!!!
