Buying a new dog and finding the best breeder

Hello PM. I am looking to get a puppy. I have been a dog dad in the past but its been step dad territory. All of my exs had great dogs. How do I start the process of finding the best breeder. I know the American Kennel Club is suppose to be a great place to start but any advice is welcome.

I am going to get a bichon. I have spent a lot of time around these dogs and love how affectionate the males are. They are hypoallergenic and do not shed. I lived with one for 7 years so I know the needs that one requires.

My thing is look for a family oriented breeder that has no more than one litter at a time.

Dont have much offer other then try to buy one in person. Buying one online is likely.going to be a scam.

Go check the place out in person to see the set up. Preferably before you buy. A good place will want to question you to make sure their dog is going some where good. Search online to see if there are a lot of complaints.

Definitely an in person experience. I have friends who have been scammed out of a few grand purchasing online. And like Buck said, you’ll want to see their setup and how the dogs are raised/kept.

it seems you’d like a specific breed, but I've always had the best luck with pound pups. You saved them and they know it and are so appreciative for it! We have 3.

My wife and I just go to the shelter on a whim and get long haired mixes. Some of the most affectionate and smartest dogs I’ve ever had. They aren’t mutts, they are premium blends.

But whatever you decide to do, you definitely have to go see the breeder’s facilities, make sure to ask about health issues and temperament. This will also give you a chance to interact with the pups.
