Can "steps" replace cardio?

I have a 3% incline treadmill at home. If I don’t get my step goal for the day I do the rest of the steps on the treadmill that night
 
As endurance athletes do most of their traing in th elower end of the intencity range with some high intensity. I would guess that steps can equal LISS or even HIIT if enough steps are done. When i look at peole that have lived the longest as into their 90's or hundreds i steps being by far more what they did then anything else. They can burn as many caloories if enough are done. The difference in walking a mile and running a mie in calories burned is not huge. If someone has shorter term goals then something other then steps may be needed.
 
In terms of getting peeled I only use steps i do no other cardio

in terms of heart health youd want to mix in some at least Zone 2 cardio

off season i usually track 10k steps starting every morning with a walk on level 2.7 on the tread

2x per week i do 5 hiit intervals on a spin bike getting HR up to 160bpm, quick and effective
