Their pics are lined up on a wall that I see every day. I train at Gold's Venice. So I'll let someone else answer in fairness.

Rex.

I AM NOT GOING TO LOOK IT UP...I AM JUST THROWING OUR SOME NAMES FROM MEMORY...

RICH GASPARI WON AFTER HANEY RIGHT....
MENDENHALL KEPT ON GETTING SECOND....I REMEMBER THAT...SO BERRY DEMAY MUST HAVE WON ONE OF THOSE YEARS....PHIL ....I CAN PICTURE HIS FACE..DAMB....SHAWN RAY...I THINK HE BEAT OUT PHIL HILL....TROY ZUCCOLATO WON ONE OF THOSE YEARS.....MIKE QUINN WON THE NATIONALS OR THE USA'S....MIKE MATTARAZO WON IT ONE YEAR....SHIT IT'S 1:30 AM ....I'LL HAVE TO HIT THE HAY FOR NOW! :D

Gaspari-NO
Titus-NO
Demay-Not a U.S. citizen
Chris-if you mean Cormier, NO
Francois-YES, health probs forced him out (IBD/Crohn's)
Demayo-YES, dead from heroin overdose

Hints, there are 2 who have since had to undergo dialysis treatments, one is listed as a pro at the top of this board, the guy who won after Haney is gay.

Thanks Rex

You are right on board....thanks for not ending it,isn't fun to watch the names they drop...training at Golds must be awesome

Gaspari

Gaspari turned pro at 84 nationals by winning his class (light heavy) but didn't win overall

Titus-turned pro through USA

That would be Tom Prince and Bob Paris. I know Zuccolotto and Strydom have won it. Dennis Newman or Cichorillo?

see thats where I get a bit confused.... Id be interested in seeing a list
of just that.

I thought the USa`s were the nationals? How many "national" shows are there
that guys can turn pro? So the Usa is differant then the nationals?
probably a dumb question But Im confused about the differant shows I Guess.

Isnt there Jr nationals, collegiant nationals, Usa`s... what are the others?

No, the USA is a different contest, but is also a pro-qualifier, as is the North Americans. I think they just made the Team Universe a pro-qualifier as well, and if I'm not mistaken these four are the only shows that qualify US athletes for pro cards. The Jr., Collegiate, and Teen Nationals - is there a Jr. USA? - I think are the remaining "national" contests , but only qualify the winners to enter the other three contests.

Another bit of history, the AAU used to run amateur bodybuilding and had the Mr. America contest. Weider also had a show called Mr. America but as I recall, the AAU sued and he had to change the name to The Nationals. I miss having "Mr. America" as the top amateur bodybuilder though. What a great title that was.

The shows that qualify the men for a pro card are the USA's-the overall winner plus a second card is awarded, Team Universe-the overall winner, North Americans-the overall winner, Nationals-the winner of each weight class. Other national shows that you don't get a pro card include Jr. Nationals, Jr. USA, Collegiate & Teen Nationals, Wheelchair Nationals, All Forces Championships(for people serving in the military), and this one may be new for next year, the USA Wheelchair Championships.

Crap

Props to wolfpack for finding them before I did. I just finished filling them in so everyone could get a good look from 82'-05'.

Thanks Wolfpack! I appreciate you explaining it to me.
Not that Ill ever be more then a spectator but Now atleast I understand.
so realy the best chance for a middle-weight or smaller to go pro
is going to be at nationals eh.... Thats cool, otherwise there might not be much of a chance for em im thinking. thanks again

No problem. It'll be hard for the lighter weight classes to turn pro by winning an overall, like at the USA's or Team Universe. Though I do know Marvin Ward won the overall as a bantam weight at the 2000 Team Universe. He also won his weight class at Nationals in 1999 & 2003 but I don't think he ever accepted his pro card and still compete's in amateur federations. He's an impresive bodybuilder at only 5'2".

Shane Dimora

Shane would be my best bet for middle weights..won his class at the nationals to get his pro card as a teenager(86)....then took 2nd at Detroit Invataional.....NOC...both in 87....so he could only be 20 at the most

Light or bantem weight

I would have to say your career is over when they give you your pro card as a batem or lightweight
