Canned Tuna and Mercury

Tuna is an excellent protein source and contains many health benefits.

What is your opinion on Canned Tuna and Mercury?
 
I use to eat a ton of it, but haven't in a few years. Not with Talapia, whitefish, mahi, salmon etc around. Yeah it's cheap but apparently the best canned tuna is kind of expensive.
 
I believe for the mercury to be a factor you would have to be eating cans upon cans of it every day. I just do not see that being a realistic problem for 99.9% of people maybe I am wrong and a few cans every day would raise your levels above dangerous, but I don't see how that is possible.
 
Also isn't chunk light lower in mercury than albacore? Thought I read that somewhere.
 
Yes, The cheap stuff is lowest in mercury and white albacore has the highest.

I have eaten a lot of tuna over the years with no obvious ill effects. One benefit, When I go outside, I can tell EXACTLY what the temperature is. :D

Many years ago when tuna was stupid cheap in the UK iw eating about 5 or 6 tins ed for over a year. This was before the internet I'd never heard of the mercury thing. Never had any negatives and I'm still hear like 18 years later. These days cottage cheese is as cheap peer gram of protein and money not add tight so I don't eat much tuna. Always keep some in the car with a tin opener for emergsncys though

like others have said, chunk light is lower. Unless your eating several cans a day for a long time I wouldnt be too worried about it

A bit concerned with mercury myself as I've been eating anywhere from 600-900g (net weight) ALBACORE a day for many years now... :eek:

How would you know if you're contaminated? Is there some kind of blood test you can do to assess your levels?

And obviously... what's the cure, if any, besides stopping your consumption?
 
U can get a blood test done bro. I use to eat a lot myself back in the day

I used to eat a good amount of canned tuna(4/6Cans ED...on the go a lot at work), friend of mine saw me do this and decided to do the same... Few months went by, said he wasn't feeling normal, went to the doc and got a blood test... He had to stop eating canned tuna due to high mercury levels :naughty:

I'm not sure the brand or how much he ate and I doubt it was close to the same amount but after that If I avoid canned tuna...

Definitely time to have it checked myself... will keep u guys updated as I feel it could be a concern for many of us, tuna cans being in fact one of the most convenient way to get your protein count on the high side.
