if you are struggling to lose weight then in my opinion eating before bed is not a good idea, but when you are trying to put on mass a Protein/Oats meal or drink is a good idea but not the only one much better than waking up at 3.00am to have a drink
Whenever I cut carbs, I start cutting from my meals that are the furthest from my training. I don't like cutting carbs though unless I'm deep into prep or my fat loss has stalled. I'd rather do a little more cardio than eat less food.
One of my staples I've used from the beginning as a hardgainer before bed is: Egg whites, maybe a whole egg or 2 added (depends on factors) with Oats on top drizzled with some coconut oil, honey and cinnamon....Delicious Gains and I've used this during contest prep as close as a week out from my shows.
