Carb cycling and Eating when hungry

Now heres a thought or atleast its a question.......I done the eating when hungry for show prep and non show prep ( off season ) with Phil and liked and enjoyed the principle,.Then since September 09 after my last show i decided to give carb cycling a go. I didnt follow the eat when hungry approach with this but i tended to be hungry anyway, particularly the low carb day, which in fairness i did end up eating when hungry, but mainly protein.

I had a decent off season and am literally starting my next show prep. Ive actually started it slowly 2 weeks ago using the carb cycling approach but with low carbs than off season and totally clean carbs to.

Now my question and perhaps my dilemma is, can carb cycling for my show prep be followed effectively as its meant to be with the eating when hungry approach also utilised??

My view is i can't see it being to much of a problem on the low days as im mainly having protein and carbs mainly in meals 1 and 2 which are pre and post workout.
Medium carb day is mainly the same with carbs in the 3rd meal, but with my high carb day i have carbs in 4-5 of my planned 6 meals so as to spread them out and not get as bloated.

Im thinking could i still do the carb cycling if i only eat the next meal when hungry or would this perhaps not allow me to eat enough carbs on the high day in particular to make it an effective carb cycling approach and have the benefits/effects its meant to as i may end up not eating enough.

I hope that makes sense as i may not of explained myself to well..

Reason

If you TRULY break down my diet approach........I do carb cycle.....guys like you with a high IQ can see that, just take a second to think about it. This is the beauty of it........

Yes, I agree 100%

I agree with this and the more I learn about other approaches the more I find your statement to be true. I think that the "zig zag" diet approach is also inadverdently involved in your nutritional approach as well.

As it happens Phil, i was actually thinking of your diet and looking at it that way. If im right, the way i was seeing it i would be having the same macro's per meal and then obviously if i was hungry, i would eat more....making it a higher carb day. If i wasnt so hungry i would eat less, making it a low carb day...

I still eat the same food sources you advocated and only in the main have oats and rice/potato's on the high day or maybe the medium day for a meal.

The original post i was thinking of the traditional carb cycling of say static protein, static fats and a high medium and low cycle, eg, 400, 225, 100g carbs/day.
Its a mind field out there..

It feels nice to get EXPOSED!! hahahahahahaha.......another high IQ client.....top of the class Anthony.......in such a short time in this sport..........it took me 30 years to figure all this out. TO answer your question.........for traditional, talk to Shelby...........he is the man.

In essence I always thought Phil's diet was a carb cycling plan... Eating when hungry will dictate amount of carbs taken in (especially on non'training days)...
Those were and are always my low days so to speak due to no training stimulus...

Brabus, if trying to get competition lean, I would think it beneficial to lower other macros (esp. fats) when hitting a very high carb day... in my own experience anyway. Maybe alex a or shelby will chime in.

Well

May I? If you lower your fats and proteins while " carbing" ...........you really cant load properly because the carbs will be utilized for energy and not stored as sugar.......no point in really carbing up then...........its all a dance

Point taken, I did not think of that...

Its amazing how such basic things can be shocking when simply written down. Thats common sense but whenever ive carb cycled i always had lower fat on high days because i always thought high fat with carbs would have more tendency to be stored as A-tissue. Although i guess that would only be if insulin spiked....which would depend on the carbs....hmmm....
