Im working on my budget and affording everything and my trainer has me eating cod as my main protein source,,,its not cheap! Lol, chicken is much cheaper and steak is even alot cheaper, and the cod is eating into my wallet.

Im wondering how some of the other white fish compare to cod in terms of price? Im going to see if i can get him to approve something less expensive.

I know talipia is cheap, but is it as good as cod?

I saw some swaii (sp) in the grocery store and it was dirt cheap and tasted good.

Any of you white fish guys have any suggestions? For some reason the cod just leaned me out much more than chicken even at the same macros so i dont wanna ask him to put me back on chicken to save money.

Tilapia at wal-mart (frozen) is 4lbs for $11, that's about as cheap as it gets

Heard swai was good tasting. I think it's leaner than tilapia too...but personally haven't eaten it myself.

You could always go catch your own!

Bro where do you live ?

Where I live cod is cheap and so is chicken but beef is sky high.

tilapia....or cod are the cheapest white fish......

i like orange roughy too, little more money but worth it
its a much CLEANER fish than tilapia.......
well worth the extra change.....you'll taste the difference

i get my orange roughy at BJs for 5.99lbs for 5lbs

I would recommend buying in bulk. Get a Costco membership $50/year (worth every penny) i get a 2 lbs bag of Cod WILD CAUGHT for $12 ($6/lbs) Mahi Mahi
2lbs bag for $9 Opa 2 lbs bag for $10, Haddock 2lbs bag $11.....great prices and choices. IMHO Wild Caught Cod is far superior (nutritionally) to all of those mentionned. Btw any reason you are only considering white fish? Wild caught salmon/sardines/ mackerel/Ahi tuna...Are all considered to be the most nutritious fish available.

ANYthing vaccumed sealed and frozen is FARM RAISED.....

i dont care what the Bag says

if you wanna go "wild caught"?????......
you'll have to hit the fish market (if by water)
early in the morning when the catch comes in...

or you could always go to the local grocery store
and get the 2 to 5 day old "fresh" fish in the case
(which i dont recommend)...

even with farm raised.....the fish are flash frozen
even more fresh then the stuff in the case

just sayin

That's like saying, grass fed beef is the same as grain fed no matter what the packging says!! Yes i had it shipped frozen vaccumed sealed. Or organic frozen veggies or fruits are the same as Non organic!
It's one think to not believe a company's claim for "personal" reasons and it's another to say that if vaccumed sealed&frozen it's farm raised. I suuggest doing some reading, in fact I'd start here: Marine stewardship Council:cool:

Thats a great deal rt there. Unfortunately I can't get myself to eat this type of fish, b/c it reminds me of the goldfish with the brains on there head. :p I know it sounds silly, but I'm strange like that.

Pollock from farmfoods.

8 fillets for £3.95

tastes like shit.

i like flounder but it isn't cheap. talapia tastes like crap. only place i can get my fish is walmart.

I buy both Tilapia and Swai.... They are cheap and taste like whatever you season it with. Whiting is also cheap, but it smells and taste too fishy for me. I usually prefer chicken, never get tired of it!

Nuff said!!!!

I prefer orange roughy over tilapia or cod. Worth the extra $ to me.

i hear most talipia is farm raised and lack omega 3 because they're fed with crap. same goes for salmon... in my area, local asian gocery store have cod for $4.99/lb nd I buy 10lb box for $47. it lasts me a week.

lol....opps....its 5.99 A POUND......for 5 pounds :p

otherwise its like 8.99 per pound

:)

Check any local butchers or meat shops. I can get 10lb of talipia for $23.99. Haddock 10lbs for $30 bucks. Just call around to different places.

Agreed x 10.

Pay a few more bucks for this fish, you will be pleased, taste is sooo much better then tilapia.

My dads buddy use to catch fresh orange roughy and give us all we wanted growing up. That was the surf and turf of fish! So good! It's hard to find these days around me

I think theres more to it then cost per pound its how much protein your eating per meal

if your eating 50-60 which most are then your looking at over 300-360g of fish raw weight (ofcourse) and depending on the fish, so all fish is going to be expensive...

chicken breast if you remove all the fat is just as lean in my opinion if not leaner then most sources of fish besides (sole, pollock, and haddock) and at 2.99 a pound you can eat 225-250g raw weight (50-60g pro) so it would save you about double the money being cheaper per pound and requiring less protein per gram of raw weight...

I personally opt for egg whites as my main source, the only thing is there is alittle more sodium but nothing out of hand I also find it digests very easily which makes my intestines happy....
