I think that study may have said that because HDL just isn't very important in the grand scheme of things when it comes to mortality.

The study results came out with a U-shaped mortality curve associated with HDL levels. The lipid hypothesis is just very confusing at this point and it appears that the association with heart disease is not nearly as strong as suggested before.
