There are a lot of things that will have a small effect on cholesterol levels. Niacin, taking fish oil, taking metamucil, eating lean, doing cardio, etc. Some have NO effect like garlic, red rice yeast (based on current research).
There are several families of drugs that will help. But the big one are statins. I never got mine below 220 without drugs. With Lipitor, it is between 150 and 180. Are there potential sides? Sure. The key one is that it can be hard on the liver. But this just gives me a reason to see my doc every month and get my liver values (and my CPK values) tested. There are more sides from half of the AAS that folks use. Using AAS and being afraid of statins is like being a fire fighter who is afraid to drink hot coffee bedause he might get burned.
So I would strongly encourage you to het your lipids tested and get on the drug that you and your doctor believe is best. And use it as an escuse to monitor your liver values, which you should do if you are on and which too few folks actually do.
