I have been using a satin(simvasatin) to raise my HDL, lower my LDL and total number(total cholestrol divided by HDL). The satin has done a good job at sorting out my bloodwork and at my last tests it was nearly normal, however my doctor adviced I stay on the satin. A major problem I have run into with the satin is muscle weakness. Everything in the gym feels heavy and I have a hard time warming up. Now I am also getting muscle cramps so have decided to come off the satin. I am pre competition so doing lots of cardio(6 mornings EW at 12 weeks out. I am also on lower carbs witch should help. The supplement program I have planed and need a little help with is :

1 : Niacin 1g ED(do I need to split thev dose up ??).
2 : HMB 3g ED
3 : Vitiman D (Not sure of dose ??) but thanks DC.
4 : Fish oil supps, Udos choice and salmond(do I need extra EFAs)
5 : Hong Qu (red yeast rice) thanks to DC again. Not sure of correct dose.
6 : Nolva 20mg ED.

Gear using at present,
Test E
EQ
GH
Slin.

Well I would add a B complex also to the Niacin to maintain vitamin B balance, I would be using NON flush Niacin too

EFA's yes UDO's will do the trick.

Other things that actively lower CHolesterol.

ASTAXANTHIN - 4-8mg per day
Psyllium Husk Fibre 2-6 grams every day
Probiotics 1-10 billion organisms per day
Garlic 80-160mg garlic oil macerate
Isoflavones 30-80mg per day.

ALternatively ask the doc about different statin, I beleive astrazenica make one with much less sides.

hope some of this may help you out

Co-enzyme Q-10 MIGHT help with your muscular weakness. I've taken as much as 200 mgs per day while on statins ... I think 100 mg seems to be enough. CoQ10 isn't cheap, but it is a relatively cheap solution if it works. Good luck!

When my cholesterol was too high a combo of UDos Niacin and Lecithin granules done the trick.

Statins

I believe it is not recommended to use a gram of Niacin while using a statin.

Other Lipid-Lowering Drugs (other Fibrates or ≥1 g/Day of Niacin)
Caution should be used when prescribing other fibrates or lipid-lowering doses (≥1 g/day) of niacin with Simvastatin, as these agents can cause myopathy when given alone. The benefit of further alterations in lipid levels by the combined use of Simvastatin with other fibrates or niacin should be carefully weighed against the potential risks of these combinations.

If you are going to use the alternative medicine to reduce your cholesterol, it would be best to discontinue the use of the statin.

I am using ZMA ED that has Vitamin B6 @3.5mg and some night melotonan witch has B6 aswell, would this be enough or do you think I need to supplement with extra B6.

I am using regular niacin as it is so cheap at H&B and spliting the dose 500mg morning and 500mg at night as this is when cholestrol is at its higest. Is there any advantage of using non-flush niacin over regular.

Some good info there Bro. Thanks, you have give me alittle homework to do. Respect.

I will also add Q-10 to my list, however my count is very close to normal. So the satin did its job and I have done allot of research and dont like the sound of the sides when using satins.

No1 : Muscle weakness

The satin done a good job but my goal is to keep my blood work right using natural supplements, cardio and deit. Thanks Bro its good to here from someone else that has had real world experence using satins. Respect.

I know from reading the insert from the simvasatin not to use with niacin along with it, I have come of the satin and am going for natural supplements, carido and deit.

non flushing niacin is much more active in a variety of clinical applications, including: high cholesterol, poor circulation, depression, and memory enhancement. This is why it is the most common form of vitamin B-3 that is recommended by practitioners.
Niacin or nicotinic acid causes a transient skin flushing. The flush is caused by the release of histamine. This is natural and harmless reaction that usually subside within 1 hour, however some individuals do find it uncomfortable. Taking niacin on a full stomach or with inositol can minimize it. Time released forms of niacin may increase the risk of liver toxicity. Niacinamide does not cause flushing but it does not have the cholesterol lowering or allergy inhibiting properties of niacin. Inositol hexaniacinate is a form of niacin that is non-flushing but still lowers cholesterol.

Quoted from my practitioners book,

Niacin/Inositol Hexanicotinate

it has been confirmed in numerous clinical trials that both niacin and inositol haxaniconate ( a non flushing, inositol bound form of niacin) are remarkably effective for lowering total blood cholesterol levels, essentially by reducing cholesterol production in the liver. An added advantage is that thesew supplements have also been shown to increase levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. Niacin and inositol hexaniconate also lower levels of lipoprotein A ( which carries and deposits cholesterol into damaged areas in the arteries and impedes the breakdown of clots ) triglycerides and fibrinogen ( a protein involved in the formation of blood clots)

In fact research hasd found has found that niacin and inositol hexaniconate provide greater reduction in heart disease risk than prescribed cholesterol loering drugs, and without the high risk of toxicity associated with the drugs. Take with B-complex to ensure B vitamin balance.

500-1000mg per day (plus b complex)

I will get back to you on the B6 but I think that you need to take a B complex either way to maintain the balance within your body.

best regards

Thanks Donker, great reading. Thanks for your help. The flush efect of niacin only happens when I take more than 500mg at any one time. So it is not really a problem. So do you think I should change to inositol, is there really that much difference.

I have been reading allot of possitive studys on HMB lowering LDL and raising HDL any thoughts.

I have also added 2g of extra fish oil to my supplemation, 1g with breakfast and 1g at night.

In all honesty I do not know whether there is that much difference, but from reading the non flush is more clinically active, but to what degree I have no
idea. I have not read about HMB and Cholesterol, I have only read the usual stuff on HMB. Personally I can't stand fish oils 'cos of the taste and smell, I always use oils from seed, mainly UDO's I buy in bulk to keep the costs as low as possible, but either oils should help too. All what I listed in my first post was from one of my manuals and they all have been clinically proven to help with lowering cholesterol and improving HDL LDL ratio. Personally I use 15grms UDO's in my shakes twice per day and keep other dietary fat as low as possible most of the time, I don't compete however so I do not know how this might fit you contest prep diet.

They are expensive but if you want to keep an eye on it yourself use one of these kits or the many that have now become available.

Consider Policosanol, Garlic, and plant sterols in that order combined w/ niacin and udos. Works wonders for me

Intresting link Bro. Thanks.

5 : Hong Qu (red yeast rice) thanks to DC again. Not sure of correct dose.

From my understanding red yeast rice is a statin, so wouldn't it have the same side effects?

Wikipedia says there is at least one report of it causing myopathy.

Edit: did a search and it's apparently the same drug as Mevacor. So just because it's sold OTC and "natural" doesn't mean it can't be a potent drug with side effects.
