Below is a teaching I put together for the council of bishops of the Mexican National Catholic Church (MNCC) as well as the Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church (ICAB) and The Worldwide Communion of Catholic Apostolic Churches (WCCAC) as a reminder of who and what they truly are representing. I changed a few words as a reminder to let all Christians know who and what they truly are.
WE ARE TRUE SONS OF GOD AND JOINT-HEIRS WITH CHRIST
The Church Fathers are witnesses to the ancient, universal, orthodox faith of the Church. They taught the truth as it was held, and always was held, by all the churches up to the present day. The Church teaches that all of the angels were created good. However, prior to entering the presence of God they were given the test of obedience. Lucifer and one third of the angels failed this test, rejected God and as a result were cast out of Heaven. Many Fathers and Doctors of the Church agreed that this test of obedience revealed the Incarnation of Christ. Satan refused to worship Him who would be both God and man. Because he became hardened with pride Satan was stripped of his glory and was cast to the earth. "I saw Satan like lightening falling from heaven." (Luke 10: 18)
Christ is the image of the invisible God. Only man is created in the image of God, not angels. While both humans and angels were put to a test, God chose to provide a plan of redemption for humanity, leaving the salvation of angels a mystery. Jesus is the word. John 1:1 "the Word was God." This is clear evidence of Jesus Christ's divinity. John 1:2-3 He (the Word) was in the beginning with God and all things were made through Him (the Word who was God). John 1:14 the Word (who is God) became flesh (Jesus) and dwelled among us, full of grace and truth. In the beginning of the Book of Genesis we read where God speaks using plural pronouns. Genesis 1:26 "Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness." Genesis 3:22 "And the Lord God said, Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil." Genesis 11:7 "Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech." Also we read according to the words of Isaiah 6:8 "Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" The plural pronoun “US” is used in defining the Trinitarian doctrine. Now the Word, equal with God, came into the world not only to save mankind but to make us joint-heirs, true sons of God. Christ left His position as God and became man. “God became man so that man could become God.” (St. Athanasius)
The sons of God are distinguished from the generations of Adam. These beings called sons of God were created, not born. The angles were created by God. Adam was created but those from him were born. When we read in Genesis 6:2 that men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and that the sons of God saw the daughters of men (human race signified) we can understand that the sons of God are distinguished from the generations of Adam. When searching the Scriptures we find that the angles were created. Three times the sons of God are mentioned in the book of Job and in each case the term refers to angelic beings. In the beginning of the book of Job we can see on two occasions the sons of God present themselves, and satan also comes with them as being himself a son of God.
In the Old Testament the only creature called a son of God is by a direct act of creation by God. Adam was a son of God because he was created by God. All who were born of Adam were sons of Adam. Angels were also directly created by God. This is why the angels are considered sons of God and called as such. No where in the Old Testament are men referred to as sons of God, only Adam. In the genealogy of St. Luke only Adam is called a son of God. Through Christ we are given the power to once again become sons of God. The Holy Gospel of Saint John states, “He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name. Who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” ( Holy Gospel of Saint John 1:11-13)
As Christians we become like angels and are sons of God. We are sons of the resurrection and will not die. “Neither can they die any more: for they are equal to the angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.” (Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke 20:36) As sons of God we are given a Divine authority for the work set before us. We are ambassadors, sent to reconcile the world back to God. Our mission is to bring the light of the Holy Gospel to all the nations. Within us there can be found no division. We are to remain humble and lowly, always reflecting the image of Christ who is the true light of the world. Once again, as sons of God we are to become holy even as the Father is Holy. If we say that we are of the light yet walk in darkness we are liars. We are called to walk in the light even as He, Christ is in the light. “For unto this are you called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example that you should follow his steps. Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. Who, when he was reviled, did not revile: when he suffered, he threatened not: but delivered himself to him that judged him unjustly.” ( The first Epistle of Satin Peter 2:21-23).
We were chosen from the beginning of time to do the works of God. We were not only called but chosen to become the perfect image of God. Romans 8:29-30 says, “For whom he foreknew, he also predestinated to be made conformable to the image of his Son; that he might be the firstborn amongst many brethren. And whom he predestinated, them he also called. And whom he called, them he also justified. And whom he justified, them he also glorified.” It is the Holy Will of God that we be conformed to image of Christ. This means we are to reflect the image of Christ as He was in His human nature. When we overcome the flesh, as did Christ, we inherit all things. We then become the begotten sons of God, through Christ, and joint-heirs with Him.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be upon you forever!!!
