Citrulline - Bad for kidneys?

So I was doing some reading on Citrulline and ran across this article. WTH. Who knew?

“Another potential problem of taking too much L-Citrulline is the damaging effects it has on the body’s kidneys. While the damage is not directly caused by L-Citrulline, the nonessential amino acid can increase creatinine levels to a dangerous point.
Individuals with kidney conditions or low blood pressure could experience serious problems when taking L-Citrulline. To be sure, it is essential to have a discussion with your doctor involving exactly how much to take or to receive a recommendation of an alternative method of producing the same effects.”

The amount of creatinine produced as a result of citrulline supplementation is small enough to be irrelevant for all but the most severely compromised. There are a LOT of substances out there; many of which are even considered healthy or provide certain health benefits (such as citrulline), that have the potential to slightly increase cratinine levels. Even training increases creatiine levels...and the more intense and protracted the training, the higher they will rise. However, as we all know, the benefits associated with weight training FAR outweigh any transient increase in creatinine levels. The same is true with citrulline and a million other things. You see, our kidneys are designed to filter toxins...and as long as they are not overstressed to the point of actual damage, then the daily peaks and troughs in we experience in creatinine levels are essentially meaningless. The only real take-away here is that if you are in renal failure...or getting close to it, you might want to avoid bodybuilding doses of citrulline...along with many other things. Thanks for the post, though. Its always good of flesh things out a bit. :)

As far as citrulline contraindications in those with low bloodpressure, yes, this has been known for quite some time. The same goes for nitrates...or anything else that may further reduce BP.

This. It’s like saying sodium is bad for everyone because people with kidney damage should avoid a lot of it
