Completely torn my right pec..

Hi,
There's a little more than 3 weeks now I've completelly torn my right pec while I was doing flat dumbell press.
I felt my right shoulder going really far in the back and then the multiple "snaps"...
finished my training at the hospital and fortunatelly my shoulder wasn't dislocated.

Day after, had an "echography" (not sure for the english word) and the conclusion was that the "great pec" is completelly torn and the "small pec" is partially torn.
The "great pec" was impacted in the distal average part of the muscle.

Now here is my problem, it's really the worst pain I have ever felt and it still hurt like hell, haven't slept well since the accident...
And worst, no surgeon (2 have been requested by my doctor and the echograph) has accepted to do the surgery... I'm getting more and more anxious about what will happen to my pec and if it will heal without it.
I will meet one of them on december the 21th, will it be to late if hopefully he accept to do the surgery?

Any advice is welcome. Many thanks in advance.

PS: sorry for my english, thx

been there done that, your looking at 6months to a year of rehab

Dude you need to get a good doc and get the surgery done or you will seriously regret it.

Thx

Thx edge250 and Philips,
I will go see again my doc tomorrow and if he is no help then I will look for another one...

Will it heal properly without the surgery?

Thx again

Your doctor will determine that. It depends on where the tear is. You could build up scar tissue that could permanantly effect the muscle. If it can be repaired surgically you could lesson the scar tissue and increase your range of movement. Don't mess around. In your case, they may need to repair multiple muscles (major and minor) and possibly your rotator. Let us know what the doc says!

*edit: BTW, I almost did exactly what you did. I was doing dumbells on a slight incline and my third rep going down I felt a sharp searing heat in upper portion of my pec. I could actually feel it beginning to tear. I dropped a 160lb dumbell straight to the floor and couldn't squeeze that pec without pain for weeks. I was lucky. Now I just don't extend that far with heavier weight. Too dangerous.

I also tore my right pec. I had the surgery and came back bigger than before.
You need to find the right doctor who specializes on athletes. Most surgeons have never done this surgery. It is recommended, that with complete rupturs of the pec, if you are young then you should have the surgery. This is outlined in medical journals. The only time you would not be able to have surgery is if you tore the actual muscle belly. Keep us posted!

p.s.It is terribly painful isn't it? Some of the worst pain of my life! Get a painkiller from your doctor.

Torn Pec Ouch!

Man I feel for you. Tomorrow will be 7 weeks since I had my pec repaired (complete rupture). I am doing pretty well with physical therepy. I just got out of my sling last week and I am pretty much pain free.
I was lucky and found a super-surgeon. He had a lot of experience, having been the ortho-surgeon for the Colorado Rockies and the Denver Broncos..
I was able to have surgery 8 days after the rupture. My doc said inside of 2 weeks is optimal. He had just repaired a guy who was 3 weeks post injury and felt it was successful. I have read case studies were repairs were very successfull after more than a year post injury, but rehab can take longer if you wait.
Also as someone mentioned earlier if you tore through the belly of the muscle, you may not be repairable.
Good luck bro.. hang in there.
KH

I am sorry that you injured yourself.

Try hard to remain positive. Be sure to exercise the rest of your body. I would do as LittleMack has suggested. See an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in work with athletes. The right physician can make all the difference.

Please keep us updated on your condition as time progresses.

Hi all,
I'm finally back and fixed!!!

Actually, I had my pec "reattached" on December the 12th 2006.

My appointement with this surgeon has been great cause he said directly and frankly, after having read my IRM and echography, that the only and appropriate way to fix this is the surgery.

So here I am with my right pec sore but fixed and around 25 lbs lost but my happyness is through the rough as my surgeon told me that he has done the surgery successfully and that, after 6 months and rehab, I will be as before.

I would just thank you all for you support and post cause you gave me the strength to not stop searching for a solution and I found a good surgeon!

That's what we're here for! Congratulations on the success of your surgery. Like there was any doubt!

THAT'S GREAT NEWS!

I HAD A BICEP REPARED AND IT'S STRONG AND LOOKS BETTER THAN THE OTHER ARM.....

TAKE IT SLOW AND GROW!:)

the weird thing about the body is that once something is injrued, it tries to repair it bigger and better than before...

I had a baseball injury...my right calf was drilled by a line drive...90mph in 120mph coming off the aluminum bat. I played the rest of the day but by the night time, I could not even walk...my calf had swollen 4 Xs the size of the other one...I figured I was at full flex when the ball hit me...I had my toe on the ground and was running hard...anyways, to make a long story short, when it healed, I could flex it harder than my left calf, and within 3 months, it was considerably bigger and stronger.

Be positive and you will be just fine...just a minor set back

Thanks OuchThatHurts,

I will have a check-up with my surgeon this wednesday and I hope he tell me that I can start my rehab with a kinesitherapist.

I think I will stop bodybuilding for some times (a year?) and do cardio + swimming when I will be able to.
I will try HGH when I come back to bodybuilding.

That's encouraging Jethro Tull :) I hope it be the case for me too.

Thanks Steak Helmet.

Hi All,
Just want to say hello, say thanks again to you all and give a little update.
I'm now on a rehab center 5 days a week and 5 hours per day.
I have just finished my 6th week last friday and I still have at least 2 weeks remaining.
I'm doing pretty well with my right pec, shoulder and arm but there is now a big difference between my right and left side.
My surgeon tell me to avoid bodybuilding for a moment and that make me kind of sad but it's for good so...

Is there some people that could give me some advices (training, cycle, etc...) to catch up my two sides ?
Many thanks in advance.

You can try uni-lateral type movements. primarily on machines to start with. This way you can anchor yourself while allowing for single arm movements. But wait until you are given the ok by the doctor and your physiotherapist.

Thanks oldfella and yes I will wait until it's OK. I was thinking that it wasn't a good idea to work only my right side but the more I discuss with people and the more it seems the best way to catch up.

Great news man! Glad you had the surgery and are on your way to recovery!

Now, you should get someone to beat you with a baseball bat, go for the biceps, they will grow big:D

What do you think are contributing to all these pec tears. I see alot posted lately. Overstretching with heavy weight. Not warming up are passive stretching etc.

I tore my pec when I was 17 during a wrestling match. My arm was trapped behind me in a ec fly position and I had pulled it out and tore the pec.
