CPAP bloating

Hey guys so I have extremely bad sleep apnea. Recent sleep study showed I would wake up 52 times per hour and I'm classed as having "severe obstructive apnea"

I have a CPAP now I've been using on and off for a month. The reason I haven't been consistent is the stomach issues it is causing me. The day after using the machine I am incredibly bloated. My stomach feels extremely uncomfortable and instead of getting in 6 meals I'm force feeding 3. I dread eating on those days because I become so nauseous for hours after

I believe this is due to air being forced down the wrong pipe and being trapped (there is a name like acrephagia or something). Has anyone experienced this and if so did you find a remedy. I'm currently choosing intermittently between feeling tired and falling asleep everywhere all day or feeling rested but my calorie target becomes impossible due to the stomach issues

I had this bad when I first got mine. You are correct in that when using positive pressure ventilation such as CPAP air can be forced down the esophagus causing the gastric distention. I would wake up and look like I had swallowed a basketball. I just kept consistently using it and my body seemed to adjust. Rarely do I ever get it anymore. If it continues I would see if your physician could adjust your PEEP until it subsides. I would definitely try to wear it though because that is pretty pronounced apnea. Good luck

I’ve never had that issue and mine is very severe too. I think mine was even a few more episodes per hour and at times I stopped breathing for up to 70 seconds.
I’d play with settings on it a little and decrease pressure.
You’ll probably have to google it to see how to get to those settings.
A few things-
What model do you have?
Is it showing how many episodes you’re having a night now?

Try not to swallow. I notice that when I have a lot of mucus draining down my throat and I tend to swallow it, I get the same thing. It makes sense that when you swallow, it will force air down as well.

Wow never heard of this, I have severe sleep apnea and my cpap has been a game changer, I get so much better sleep now. Just took me a while to get use to using it.

Believe my average was 70 API’s and hour. I have the Resmed Airsense 10. However, it’s not communicating to Resmed due to it being caught up in the drop of the 3G coverage not being supported anymore. So I have to get my reports directly from my machine. I actually just ordered an Airsense 11 so I can track my sleep through the MyAir app.

I’ve been using mine since 2016 and never once heard of what you’re experiencing. I’m a mouth breather while sleeping due to sinus issues at night. Keep using it though!!! Maybe get you one of those chin straps to keep your mouth closed at night.

I finally got comfortable using mine and the difference was using a nose pillow even though I had previously been a mouth breather. I could never get comfortable with the full face mask. I trained myself to breath through my nose and it is so much more comfortable. It has made a huge difference for me as well.

I use exactly the same one and it's great, in the full face mask I couldn't breathe normally

Mine has been a life saver. I do fart like crazy when I wake up in the morning because of it though

I went from a full face to just a nose piece and it's much easier for me to breath and fall 💤 asleep

Have y’all ever had any sinus issues at night? I can breathe just fine through my nose all day, but something about the night makes me a mouth breather. I have the full face one and it works for me, but I’d be down to try the nasal pillows too. If they don’t work my wife will be quick to punch me if I’m snoring to wake me up!

Game changer but I get air issues. My pressures nearly max out my Airsense 10, can't keep my mouth shut or even tape it so full face. I get air pushed into me and bloat. It's funny, first half of the night it can be huge burbs (like record setting whole body emptying). 2nd half of the night it's farts as if I don't burp it out it gets into me and goes through. Sucks but after a few mins in the morning it's done at least. Kind of pathetic, haven't found a fix.

With air going in the stomach sometimes changing the mask type can solve the problem..

ive never heard of this and mine at its worst was like 60 "incidents" per hour. But the CPAP was a game changer - i also use a FULL face mask.
Like someone said, i fart like crazy in the morning BUT no bloating or anything.

Thedorky, you should go nose pillow if you dont already.

Started off with nose pillow, then mask covering the mouth with nose pillow, now on full face mask and it's the only one I feel comfortable sleeping with. I'm also a heavy mouth breather and my sleep specialist basically said we aren't treating any apnea if you are primarily breathing through your mouth by using a device that pushes air through the nose

After a couple sleep studies and dealing with insurance last November I had a surgical procedure to emplace the Inspire upper airway stimulator implant to treat my sleep apnea. A month later in December of 2021 it was activated and have been using it ever since.

The deciding factor for me was going out to Texas last year for memorial service and visiting for 2 weeks. I forgot to bring my CPAP device that I've been using since 2008. The trip, vacation would have been so much better if I was able to sleep peacefully. That's when I considered the implant to no longer worry about such issues among other things

No more being a single guy going to a woman's house without my CPAP and scaring her from choking and gagging all night. Or being a single guy going to a woman's house with a CPAP only to look and sound like Darth Vader all night.

Inspire has an educational app you can download to learn more as well as their website. The link below I've posted is where it's information to find a doctor near you to discuss more.

November 15th of 2021 is when I had mine put in my chest. So it's been nearly one year and so far no regrets. I don't even notice it's there.

Basically right before bed you take your fob device and hold it over the implant to activate it. Then it has a 30 minute ramp time and will turn on by the time you're asleep.

The implant has a wire attached to your rib cage and a wire that goes up to your throat to activate your tongue. So it's constantly monitoring your breath to move your tongue just enough to help with breathing

I’ve heard of that and considered it. It’s like $15k just for the device alone isn’t it?
When I first heard of it I had terrible insurance but now it’s much better. Did insurance cover any of it for you?
The whole single guy thing and sleep apnea aren’t a good combination lol. Some snoring would be one that but the gagging and choking sounds are pretty obnoxious

Interesting. I know a little bit about this device but have not done a ton of research.

Curious to know if you've had your apnea checked since it's been in or are you just going by "how you feel" and if partners say you are or aren't snoring?

This could be something that may be remedied with a adjustment to your settings. Do you know what your settings are at? Is the range too broad (i.e 6-20). Is EPR turned on?

I wanna know if you or insurance paid for this? I’d much prefer the Inspire versus using a CPAP. But I’m not paying $15K unless I win the lottery!

If insurance paid for it, how did you make that happen??
