It has many applications.
Keeping doctors and surgeons in a steady income stream. and it will surely get you a spot in the next cirque de solel!! Other than that it is foolish and dangerous. That is why you will never see anyone squatting any real weight like that. even with light weight it is fool hearty at best.

i used to work at a small gym and the owner always did these. impressive balance but it wont do shit for building muscle

Or the ones your training partner used to bust to get you another rep or two!!
 
i have a friend that actually does squat like that.. he uses it for his balance hes heavy into mma.. has like 3 black belts in different disciplines and apparently he used to have really shitty balance.. i guess it has its place.. for FIGHTERS not lifters hehe
 
I do those all the time but I only do one leg at a time:D

I saw a guy doing these on a half ball at my gym (I mentioned this in the "Things that piss you off at the gym" thread) I just cringed the whole time while he did some very shallow squats at 135# :confused: What's the deal with the ball on everything these days? What's next? Squating on a pinata?

better off using a bosoo (sp?) ball that has a flat bottom and doing squats with no weight. This is meant to strenghthen the small stabilizer muscles. What that guy is doing is just stupid.

1. If you plan on doing that as a circus act
2. If you plan on entering a squat competition on a sail boat

Hey, I saw some idiot in the gym today doing 85lb DB presses on a ball. The darn ball was compressed half flat. I was just waiting on it to explode. Imagine how many body parts would need surgery afterwards?
