Curtis Leffler, from Hawaii, was one of the strongest bodybuilders of all time, at least in the upper body. He competed in the 1995 WSM. Unfortunately, he passed away prematurely in 1998 at the age of 36.

Below is a video of his training, in which he, among other things, behind neck presses 405 lbs for reps.

I remember him. He was 2 years younger then me. Died of a heart attack at 36. Way too young.

So glad you joined. Otherwise I would have missed out on two YouTube videos

Big Barney RIP

He was also the S&C for Vitor Belfort

I think it was DC who said that he'd never seen anybody that shade of purple back in the day, wonder what his hematology panel was like

I remember this guy from my younger days!! Too bad he passed!

I remember seeing him in a few of the early UFC days w/Vitor. I was like, "why is a bodybuilder cornering a fighter." That's when Vitor was in his heavyweight phase. Randy took him out and I think he was pretty much done as a heavy and dropped down to 205 and was still pretty muscular. But yeah, Curtis was a very interesting color. Freakishly strong presser and incredibly vascular when he competed. Think he lived and trained in Hawaii for some time.

Great guy.. got to meet him just before he passed.. massive guy.. but literally purple.. a very unhealthy toxic kinda look.. very prominent veins everywhere.. reddish purple skin color.. he was sponsored by Champion Nutrition.. they used him alot in their ads

Someone who trained with him once said they saw him incline bench press over 600 lbs (272.5 kg). He didn't specify how, but I suspect it was on a smith machine, but then again, there aren't many men, even among powerlifters SHW, who could replicate that.

He trained with the owner of Champion who was named Zumpano.. he recommended guys train in the middle range of presses entirely.. Tom prince.. leffler.. etc all did that training style.. but that was when they were training for bodybuilding .. but yes he was insanely strong

So no elbow lockouts? Do you know why he had them train like that? Did he have some theory?

Well he believed the middle range was the most effective not limited by the triceps and the poor leverage in the stretch position.. he believed it allowed more weight to be used in the most effective part of the range..

In the video I posted he is performing his first exercise (behind the neck press) in the way you described.

Ronnie & jay also trained this way, maybe with a bit more emphasis on the bottom portion as well. I have gone back to doing this and I find it works well.

That name Zumpano rings a bell for some reason ?
