Doing a complete kitchen renovation right now. I have never owned a decent or complete set of cutlery. I'm tired of grabbing knives that smash things rather than cut and forks and spoons that are bent up and don't match. I don't have a fortune to spend but I would like something with some quality if that's possible. Wondering if you guys have any tips?

I like Mikasa forks and spoons - big, sturdy construction, hold up well over time.

For knives, I have a Farberware set that gets job none. Nothing fancy but it came from Amazon at a good price, has a nice assortment of knives, and has a decent self-sharpener in it.

The Farberware set came with kitchen scissors but they didn't last long. My Easy Function scissors have been much better.

Not sure what your budget is, but you can get a real nice Wusthof set for like $350-400. Bed, bath, and Beyond would prob be your best bet for best prices too. Plus you can get a 20% coupon online, so you actually probably pay less than $300.
I own a Wusthof set, and I was pleased with it.

Cutco hands down.

Best knifes/products you’ll ever owned. They have a forever guarantee which means you can pass them down to your kids/family and free sharpening as long as you own them. Easily one of the best products from any company that I’ve used, ever.

relating to the above ^ cutco is alright for the money but you can get better non serrated knives for the same price. also dont try to sell cutco to others, its basically a mlm :)

A50#,

When it comes to cutlery, make your first purchase last.

For many years I spent every weekend hand forging knives.
Made the coal or charcoal fire and hammered them into
shape . . . used all sorts of ‘exotic’ steel and other tool steels.
After forging and grinding I would heat treat and polish the
blade and fit it to a hardwood handle. I did it all . . . soup-
to-nuts. (Again for all the doubters who PM me, I recently
found some long lost fotos of some of the knives I made
and will post them if anybody is interested.)

With regards to ‘commercial grade’ cutlery, I would go
with something like a Wusthof grade. I would avoid
spending a lot of money on the handmade, custom knives
and the high priced Japanese stuff. Invest wisely now
and you will enjoy them your entire life.

Once you decide, I would be happy to review and comment
on your selection.

Hope this helps.

FYI . . . . this is the man who got me started making knives.
He lives not far from me. I took his knife making class.
Karl Schroen Knives

PS. I also wrote for several knife magazines on hand forging
knives.

I have a set of Henkel knives, which is a decent mid-range set. They sharpen well, and didn't break the bank. Pretty happy with them.

You most likely don't need a set of knives and would be better served by buying a few knives that are good that you actually do need. This is probably not all going to be from the same brand.

Most could get by with a bread knife, a decent chefs knife (you can get a victorinox for like $30 that is an insane value for what it is- look at the Amazon reviews) and probably a paring knife. Buy a decent set of 4-6 steak knives and call it a day.

Henckel, messermeister, wusthof are the brands I would choose from. If you have a cutlery store close by I would highly recommend trying before you buy

Great brand/quality. I recently bought a Victorinox watch as well.
