Hi fellas, I just started doing deadlifts and I never did them much before. What kind of deadlifts hits the traps the best? Is there anything I should do to involve the traps better?

im guessing youre trying to distunguish (sp) btwn straight bar and trap bar...but im gonna have to go with straight bar...

here is a pretty good interpretation basically its you vs. the raw weight...but form is very important

i doubt he's debating between the straight bar or trap bar...more so sumo or convention deadlift. i like conventional deads better than sumo. sumo just feels awkward to me. you will build big thick nasty traps (and everything else) from deads. enjoy

No matter what you do dont do the stiff deadlift, save that for leg days.

any type of deadlift will hit the traps very well, especially if you roll your shoulders back tot squeeze yo back at the top. conventional is fine. keep it simple! ronnie (and all the other pros) has his crazy back and traps from reg deadlift and reg shrugs. nothing fancy

why dont you just do traps? do partials...that hits the back and saves the legs.

by saying you just started doing deads i assumed you were doing them for overall growth, but wanted good traps as well...if you are doing them strictly for the traps then i would agree with bba and do rack pulls a few inches above the knee

When you do first pull, that is to drive the bar up and get it moving, pull your shulders back at the start. As you reach the top make sure you hit lockout. Pull your shpulders back and a slight hip thrust forward as you squeeze the glute hard. Keep the bar dragging against the legs the whole time. If done correctly you will have racing stripes all the way from your shins to the top of your thighs. Keep pulling with your shoulders. The sequence or as I like to call it is Bar before butt. This means the bar should leave the floor before you start your butt in motion.

Conventional deads are best for what you want.
**broken link removed** I suggest this technique for now.

As for additional trap exercises:

Also the issue with deadlifts tends to be people not pulling back with their shoulder blades at the top. This will work the trap more completely.

Thanks guys for all your good responses. I will do traditional deadlifts and concentrate on the traps working.
