do bodyweight exercises and calisthenics give a different look than heavy lifting?

Just browsing youtube I see some of these guys that do calisthenics have a good physique, very lean and ripped, better than many who bodybuild.

Do you think they are so lean and hard, because calisthenics gives a different look? Because they simply don't eat as much as we do (aka over eat)? Do you think they train heavy too, just do calisthenics as well and most of their look is attributed to real lifting?

Has anyone ever tried only calisthenics for a while and how did your look compare to lifting heavy the traditional bodybuilding way? I almost feel like if you tried to do both, the calisthenics would cut into the recovery you need if your actually training hard for size with the most volume you can handle.

They certainly seem healthy. Here is a gymnast.

Ive never understood how those guys get like that. Flies in the face of what we all do (resistance training with progressive overload).

BBC genetics.

The guy is a freak for sure! Other cyclist sprinters have big legs too.

Simple. Because he has way better (....WAY BETTER) genetics than you do.

Robert Forstemann

It is my opinion that his leg development is a combination of genetics,
cycling and weight training.

What comes first is genetics. Second, I don’t know. Is the squatting
primarily responsible for his leg development or is it cycling? Or did
cycling make him a good squatter?

I liked that 2nd video where he is balancing the barbell on his back with no hands squatting!

I agree. Forstemann also focused a lot more on leg development than other cyclists; I think he had a sprinting background too.

Male gymnasts still lift weights.

A former coach of MINE is an Olympic strength coach at the Olympic training facility in Colorado Springs.
He trains those dudes 2-3 times a week...weights. Just like us.

Yes, I agree.

And it doesn't hurt doing hundreds of dips, chins and hands stand presses each week.

For abs I don't think they do sit-ups. Abs get a work out doing led raises (hold) and
other such movements as a function of their 'routines'.

Would love to hear from your coach what he has them doing. Ask him if you get a chance.
Or maybe you know.
