was wondering are pushups pullups chins etc good for building muscle mass or more for toning up and such

Does the muscle have something to continually adapt to? :)

pull ups and rows are basically all my back workout consists of

so id say they work very well

just add weight to urself wen they get to easy

YES! Technically speaking, they are absolutely SUPERIOR movements for muscle-fiber activation. They are responsible, in large part, for my outstanding chest and back development.

YES.............IMO they give the muscles a look of depth to them that weights just can't do...

Certainly. They should be augmented in a regular training routine. I'll often superset pushups after bench to kill the tri's. And weighted pull ups for working sets. IMO nothing touches them. Look at the prisoners. Poor diet- limited free weights, but all the push ups and pulls they desire. In the cell!

If you can do a maximum of around 5-8 you will have 100% fiber recruitment from the very first rep... so yeah I'd say they're pretty good.

Anyway I'd love to see a physiological definition of toning please:confused:

Pull-ups are incredible for back development.

For push ups, Put your feet on a raise small step and have a training partner place plates across your shoulders and then support them, a great way to work your chest without any shoulder problems from the bench, especially if you do them with the perfect push up handles.

Weighted pull ups/chins are one of the best exercises for your back too.

I could barely get my lats to grow until I started to do pull ups on a regular basis

I always do pushups during session for pecs, superset with another exercise that varies from time to time, for me is a great exercise to increase pecs.

If you are talking about only doing those and not lifting weights, then you are screwing yourself out of your potential. If you are talking about including them in workouts, then yes they are good, especially pull ups

I love push ups and pull ups…..i do push ups at the end of every chest workout and normally start my back workouts with pull ups.:)

Though I no longer do them pullups were my all time fav. Injuries now make them impossible. First 5 years that I trained I hammered pullups , close grip
wide grip with added wt high reps etc. Was my "core" back training
pullups deads and bent bb rows are my top 3 back moves.
Push ups are great also. If you have ever had any time with no wt access
you will know. Many variations and they really work well.

Yes. You can make pull ups harder and you can make pushups harder. Since you can be progressive with them then clearly they have potential to build muscle.

In my opinion, if you cannot do 10 chinups you have no place doing bicep curls. If you cannot do 10 pullups, you shouldnt be doing lat pulldowns.
If you can't do 50 pushups in a set, you should stop benching and start doing pushups. Bodyweight exercises build a core foundation on which to grow.

I just did 9 pullups and 45 pushups, I guess its back to the drawing board.
Just when I thought I was looking like a bodybuilder.lol

Lol I struggle with pull ups as well. Guess I'm in the same boat

I'm sure both of you understand the point that I am trying to make. Body weight exercises are not only good for muscular endurance but they also help keep your joints strong and develop hypertrophy.
One can also do muscleups.

This is just an example.
