Do you have to be a “pretty boy” or model to be competitive Men’s Physique?

So I ve been doing a deep dive research into everything Men’s Physique related (I’m super ADHD, so my hyperfocus superpower is currently engaged in this and learning everything I can)- and one thing I’ve noticed is that, unlike Classic and Open, EVERYONE who does well in this division is, for lack of a better term, a “pretty boy” or model looking type.

Is being “good looking” something the judges actually look for? And I don’t mean just personal hygiene, haircut and grooming because that’s I assume the same for all classes.

I mean, good news for my kid competing- but definitely bad news for me if so.

I guess that’s part of the esthetic? 🤷‍♂️🤣

At the top, yes, it seems to matter. It's not in the judging criteria but it certainly seems to matter even if it's a subconscious bias. At a local show, no.

Show up in shape. Be comfortable with the poses. Let the chips fall where they may.

Man I know it your first show and all. But IMO I think you are over thinking everything a bit too much. There is not one person that’s going to hit everything perfectly on their first show. That including diet and peds.

Best advice I can give you. Look your best and have fun at the show. Enjoy it and learn from it. It’s a great experience whether you win or loose. I mean this in the most kindest way.

Imo it really shouldn't but it wouldn't hurt...lol.

Thanks for the advice!!! Man, I wish the written word was better at conveying emotion because I’m actually totally having fun and a BLAST with the process and the event! 😁 None of these questions come from a place of stress or anxiety, quite the contrary- I truly enjoy the analysis, the learning, all the nuances… plus my kid is having the time of his life!

I figured I should provide some context, don’t want you guys to think I’m concerned at all at this point! It’s going to be epic no matter what! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍

Only worried if you are extremely ugly.

As long as you don't look like fidos butt you'll be fine.
Enjoy yourself and the relationship with your son.

If you are not his twin brother you are gonna be fine. At the end of the day with some exceptions mens in general are on a more rough side regarding looks, it is kinda normal for us.

This is probably more due to the people the class attracts - it's not published judging criteria.
Appearance tends to make a difference in all classes to some degree at the very top when all else is equal - just like in life in general.

Don't worry about it. Do it. Enjoy.
