Does Anyone Still Do Pullovers???

Guys, I know they're an "old school" movement, but does anyone still use dumbbell pullovers in their routine? I first started doing them over 20 years ago as part of the old "Super Squats" routine and gained 25-30lbs in one summer as a 17 year old newbie. I have a love/hate relationship with them now after trying to go heavy(100+lbs) when I was younger and straining the crap out of my rotator cuffs. LOL! Whenever I do them now, I go light and go by feel.

I do em prolly every other back workout. Usually its my last exercise of the day. I really like the stretch of the lats and rib cage area.

I love pullovers. I don't go heavy just enough for a stretch and use high reps.

I miss the old school pull-over machines. Nautilus I think. Now I do them with a lat pull down bar while standing bent over.

Atlantis makes a very good one. Great to hold in the contracted position for a second or two. But a dumbell would destroy my shoulder.

The old school Nautilus pullover machine was awesome, now I do cable standing and dumbell mountain dog style on the bench.

I may look at putting these back into rotation. The only downside with these is that after a certain weight the movement shifts from my lats to my triceps

I love the stretch i get with them. I just have to concentrate to keep my breathing right.I remember an ole iron man mag (circa late 70's) debating whether or not it gives you that "pot bellied look",as i guess your mostly stretching the lower ribcage.Any tips on how to stretch the upper part as evenly as possible?

"Mountain dog style"...is there a thread describing this? I love pullovers but I think I stay away from them cuzof my rotator cuffs. I still love em though so if there is a different style I wanna try it. Thanks

I have a hard time breathing the next day if I do them. When I do them it's usually at the end of my workout just for a stretch, but man the whole day after my workout it feels like I got hit in the chest with a sledgehammer. Anyone else experience this?

Still doing at almost 50 yrs old. I use them to work my lats but I do more stiff arm pull downs with bar or rope and pre-exhaust superset with stiff arm pulldown then go immediately into chins to the front. Really get a nice burn in my lats from it.

I love em, hit that exercise at least once a week or every other week

I normally get some light dumbell sets in after wkout for the stretch..

How do you guys hold the dumbbell? Flat with the front of your hand or do you use more of the side of your hands and wrap the hands around the bar?

I find that they overlap too much between chest and lats. I'd do them if I train chest and back in the same day.

Mountaindog style - ALONG the bench, not the old school way of laying across it. Head hangs off just a bit. Deep stretch at the bottom but a somewhat shortened range of motion, coming up just to the forehead to keep constant tension on the lats and serratus.

MountainDog Pullovers - YouTube

These feel great and are very effective.

I do the machine pullovers for a stretch exercise after my main lat workout. I lump it with chest flys, I don't think it's a great exercise for building mass, but I do think you get a great stretch from it after finishing up your heavy lat sets.
