Liothyronine (T3), or Cytomel is best to be taken on an empty stomach, more so for liver/tissue uptake of the intended dose taken, otherwise the efficacy of the drug is reduced to a lesser degree.
There are several OTC supplements as well as RX interactions that will reduce the tissue uptake of T3. A few of the OTC supplements are, Chromium picolinate, Magnesium citrate, Magnesium hydroxide, Magnesium salts (magnesium gluconate, magnesium oxide, magnesium sulfate) this includes anti acids as these may act on absorption, decreased via chelation.
If your taking Metformin with high doses of T3, these will also interact. The combo may decrease the hypoglycemic agent efficacy,as high dose thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) may cause hyperglycemia (antagonistic effects).
Red yeast rice and lemon balm may also interfere with the absorption of T3.
