dogs and deca..?

hey guys, i have 2 english bulldogs one is going to be 4 in Nov and teh other will be 13 in Nov....my question is about my 13 year old... My vet is floored by her as she is awesome shape for a bulldog at any age but to be 13 is unheard of.. the average life span of an english bulldog is 7-8 years..

My problem is she is starting to have a lil arthritus issues in her back knee area from a ruptured ACL 8 years ago and i have her on Rimadyl (a pain killer) when she needs it to ease the discomfort when she has issues...i've had very little problems till the fall time the last 2 weeks..now that cold weather is here she seems to need more then 1/2 tab once a week she is looking at 1/2 tab twice a day... this is as strong as i can go with the drugs or care to and like i said her overall health is kickass..she is like many of us in the winter tiem with our aches and pains...i have her on liver and kidney cleaners that i take to help keep her blood count and damge to amin and so far she test out great with NO side effects...

she has been on chondrotin and glucosomine and omega's for years and she is soo freaking healthy ...My dogs mean the world to me and they are the closest i have to kids...i have never married nor had children so they are all i have and i hate to see one in pain...

do you think that 50mgs every 10 days of deca will help ease the pain a bit, like it does for us, and if so how safe do you think it is for her ?

Yeah I bet deca and eq would help her but my dog is on glucosamine and chondroitin for her back. Kinda pricey but over the life of the bottle, its not much at all. She gets in and out of the house and off her butt more easily. Cheaper than juice by far. Personally I hope they learn a lot more about juice by the time I get old. I think it would do wonders for our old people. I watched too many family members on prednisone and water pills and crap that could have been eliminated by "youngerizing their blood hormone profile.

Big dog lover here 2 bro and if I were in your shoes I would not think twice about giving her some deca if it would help. How heavy is your bulldog? Also where did the 50mg every 10 days come from?

Actually they do understand now what juice does for older people and are opening Longivity clinics around the nation. What sucks is...it's not recognized by insurance companies yet, but I bet it soon will be.

As for the dog... I'll bet even 1/2 that would be ok... 25 mgs every ten.

SS

P.S. Mrs SS says put him on Purina Joint Managment. It's a food that comes with a prescription by the Vet. Use that in conjuction with what you're doing.

She's a vet tech by the way. Our only disagreement is..I'd put dogs on juice..she wouldn't...no biggy.

I gave my little Yorkshire 25 mg every 3 weeks and he lived another 2 years without pain and got 15 years old! :D

Man , it so great to hear about someone loving thier dogs as much as I loved mine .[ And also be such a great owner ] Sadly , over the the last two years I lost each one one of them. [I had two boxers and a Rott]When they turned 10, shortly thereafter one by one each were overtaken by cancer [ man I hate that disease] My dogs were everything to me and I miss them everyday [ they were my kids ] I expirmented with my boxers were they were two with a little EQ and test . They each did a couple of three week cycles ........Man , it made them huge [ the male got to be a mucular 130 and the female made it to 100 - they were brother and sister ] people thought they were awesome .....I look back now and it was a mistake that haunts me every day . I would do anything to have those guys back for a couple of more years [ or even one happy healthy day ]and I wonder if my expiriment shorted thier lives .I left my Rott alone[ he got cancer last , but was the youngest as well ] as he was 140 anyway and lovable but very agressive to others .

In your situation I think you should try some low cycles of deca and see how it goes ....May you have many more happy healthy days with your beloved friends ............I miss my kids everyday [ it actually still hurts worse than any of the firends or family that I have lost ....and I have lost many .....I guess maybe I am just fucked up or a little crazy ...lol] Man , I miss my dogs ..........I wish your and your family [ dogs included ] nothing but the best ...........take care

Wow some great responses and soem very heart fely ones at that...Thank you everyone..I will comment on each right here..

MY dog is 50 each...nice long and lean nevert got her heavy....deca has a good half life so ten days seems healthy amount of time and based on her weight 50mgs seems nice...

SOUNDS great and i understand your wifes reluctance but i do feel it is healthier for her to do teh deca then the pain killers and have her blood tested every 60 days to see if damage is being caused...i think deca is a smarter and healthier choice...thank you both

Hompie...I gave my little Yorkshire 25 mg every 3 weeks and he lived another 2 years without pain and got 15 years old!

SOUNDS like you had great luck with it aND I HOPE to see tHe same results...

THE blame and pain you feel is clearly understood and normal bro..my second bulldog got into some mouse poison March 5th,2001...i called a friend who raises dogs and said be sure to give her lots to drink and watch her the next few days if she acts weird or shows signs of any kind to get her to the vets... Well she showed no signs of any thing so things were fine...
Until 30 days later when she fell on the steps and was limping for a few hours so i took her to teh vets..on the way their her lip started to bleed where she had scratched it and i could not get it too stop so when i got there they tried to get the bleeding to stop and could not.. I kissed her goodbye, she licked my face and headed home, 30 minutes later they called me back too get back there as something was wrong with her...i made a 25 minute trip in 15 minutes and when i got there she was dead...

The poison took 30 days to start working and to this day evereytime i think about i cry like a baby and the guilt i feel i so overwhelming i have crazy thoughts... accidents happen no matter how much we think thinsg could be different...i will never be told other wise as it was my fault and a qucik trip to the vets and some vitamen-K and she woudl still be here...

We both did what we thought was best and looking back would do thinsg differently but willnot do thinsg like again..we live an learn as much as it hurts.. Your a great person with a huge heart never forget that..

IABADMAN I love boxers!
We had 3 of them when I still lived at home loved them to death.
Now Im a gymowner for 16 years already and boxers are a little bit too big and wild to keep in the gym. So when my Yorkshire (yeah something different) gave up after 15 years I got myself a Boston Terrier.
I see her as my little boxer ;-) . She is so fucking cute :p

BTW giving steroids to a healthy dog is probably not the way to go. But if your dog gets weak and old it sure gives back some quality of life!
I know I've seen it.......

Hompie , good for you bro .........boxers are such awesome dogs [ once they are past thier puppy stage that is ......cute as hell ....but destructive little suckers ....lol ] Boston 's are min boxers .......those little shit's are so damm cute ......is your real high strung ? I heard they are insane and hard to get to relax .....lol .....that is why bulldogs are so cool .....feed them , give a bone to guard or chew on , alittle affection ,and they are happy as hell...............little dogs give alot but seem to ask alot as well ....lol

I have a Rott that is 180 lbs and is 9 years old. He fell and hurt his neck some time ago, took him to the vet, said he herniated a disc in his neck. The surgery would be $8000 and there was an 80% chance he wouldn't make it due to significant bleeding. I obviously elected not to go through with the surgery. He has lost 40-50% of his muscle control in his rear legs but still gets around.....somewhat. This post is very interesting to me. He is in the last stages of his life anyway and I hate seeing him as a mild invalid, although I don't think he is in a great deal of pain. Does anyone have any suggestions on dosage for my big guy.

He has helped me through alot of shit including a divorce, I would like to keep him around for as long as I can....as long as he is not in pain.

Thanks for listening.....

I hear ya about you dog(s), I would not want to see my dog in pain and to have him live a couple more years pain free would be priceless.

My good friend is vet here in town and I was talking with him about gear and dogs. if your dog is 40lbs, he would say 25 - 50mgs every 10 to 14 days...he does not recommend it, but he knows that people will do it. He said it should help ease the pain, or if anything, it should allow you to cut back on the pain pills through the cold months. watch the water weight, if your dog starts to gain a lot of water weight, try walking him more or making him more active. If that does not work, cut back...the extra weight on the joint is not worth the DECA.

hope this helps??

VulgarDisplay--

I checked with my older sister who is a vet and she said 25mg per 50lbs./bodyweight. There is also a sprcial Joint dog food made by Purina but it has to be bought via a script through your vet.

Thanks Jman, I appreciate the input. I'm going to give it a "shot", I sure would like to see him enjoy life a little more, and I don't want to make "that" decision yet....you know the one to put him to sleep. We took him to a specialist and he recommended some very clean and natural dog food but I will ask him about this other brand.

I will keep you all updated and let you know how it goes.

I love teh feedback i am getting and i like what i am reading...i am always upset when i see a vet handout drugs and meds ,like it is nothing but when it comes to a little deca for teh joints and nothign more they are very very hesitent to say or do anything... the meds " Priscilla" is on are so strong that my vets wants me to get her blood done every 3 months to be sure all is fine...i give her supplements out of my own supply to keep her kidneys and livedr functions high and healthy..

I love my vet and he has gone out of his way more times tehn i care to think about to be sure my girls are happy and healthy...but he is not sure or knows too much about the deca route...I will continue to seek info and get feedback and make a choice then...

Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart......

I never put her on the deca since the glucosimine/chondrotin, omega-3, and Rimadyl are wroking well... her blood work is perfect for a bulldog at any age but she is going to be 14 in Nov and my vets can not believe it when she comes trotting in..

Thank you for asking and for careing to everyone, as many of you know my 2 dogs ARE my life since i have no kids and no wife so they mean the world to me

I know what you feel bro !
as you know I lost mine 1 month ago
do everything you can to protect your dogs
I'm sure you're an amazing "dad" for them ;)

let us know how it goes !

BBB,
I love mine also. I dont know what I'd do without him. Anyway, have you considered Aflutop? Not sure if it works the same for dogs, but it may be a solution. (Alin stocks it) Good luck man.
