Dont know what to do family. You all know how long and hard I have worked just to become a human being again and come out of this self doubt. Today…just now….I got a job offer from a manager at a store called Gordman's to become an assistant gofer this gofer that guy. I am over qualified but I will sure take what I can get and thank them for the opportunity.
*THE CATCH* The position does not normally require a background check nor credit check, however the person hiring for this position is requiring it and my credit sucks and my back round is iffy.
My interview is tomorrow at 9:30.

Just be yourself and be honest. If you dont get the job oh well, its not the end.

Agreed. Just smiling and giving off a good vibe will go a long, long way. Good luck!

Be straight up Nos, your a great guy and they will see that. If they ask, just tell them you have made your mistakes and learned from them. Anywhere is a start man, just do your thing!!!

Remember what I told ya before, everyday will be a better day, just do the right thing everytime and it will pay off!

Most people today in civilized countries understand that human beings aren't "perfect". If you don't get the job cuz of your past, fuck them, don't let that put you down in any way. We all have made mistakes and if we have truly perfected ourselves we will eventually succeed. It might take time, so if you don't get this job, Karma will bring you an even better job in the future. Best of luck bro.

True, give it your best and if it doesn't pan out then it's time to move on. :) Good luck!

All you can do is be yourself. Focus on your people skills and wow them that way. Make eye contact, answer truthfully yet tactfully, and be energetic. Nobody wants to interview someone who's dull!

I've been in your shoes! This is all great advice everyone has given. Be honest, but no need for details. I always gave a very vague and played down description of my past without lying. You would be surprised how often people won't care after they have met you. If you are friendly and polite and easy to talk to, you will get the job.

Just be yourself and don't worry, there will be other opportunities. BETTER opportunities. If you don't get hired, I feel bad for the guy, cause he is the one who is losing!!

Be honest. Many times it is not whats in your credit report or Background Check but how you respond to the questions. Take responsibility for any shortcomings, be ready to explain steps you have taken to insure that a repeat is not going to happen. I do credit and background checks as a part of my interview process with employees. I hired a young man with a felony meth conviction and a stint in rehab two years ago and he has been a wonderful employee. He was the only one interviewed with a felony conviction and he won the position. Why did I take the chance? He was honest, forthcoming, took responsibility, and asked for a chance. He is now in a professional position with a good salary, and trustworthy. You can do this. Be yourself. You are not what others judge you to be. You are what you choose to be. Good Luck. Be at Peace

Hey NOS... you got some very good advise already.

I just wanted to tell you to go for it, and wish you good luck! People do get second chances and this could be yours... :)

Well as far as I know nobody can turn you down because of past credit. I do think that is illegal, or at least my attorney told me. I have had a lot of people with troubled backgrounds and it didnt bother me unless they told me. And I mean like drug convictions, now child molesters or rapist, sorry i dont have any use for them. And most people have to do a background check for insurance purposes. A lot of car dealers will not hire managers because the dealers insurance said no.

Nos, just go for it buddy. You have nothing to lose! You may be pleasantly surprised!!

I was in prison for a few yrs and when i got out i changed my life . I went back to college for 4yrs and was able to get my degree. I was turned down for every job interview i went to for a whole yr because of my past. I finally went in to an interview and was upfront with the owner and just asked him to give me a shot at the job. I have now been with that company for 3 yrs now. I am a computer tech and love my job. I often thank my boss for giving me a chance. Keep your head up bro and good luck!!

Be honest. I have some things in my past that pop up on a background check.

I had to deal with this a year ago with my current employer a year ago. One of the things is always a potential deal breaker, so I just sat down and wrote a letter explaining what happened. Luckily, that issue has nothing to do with drugs or trust issues - a point I make sure to point out.

At the end of the interview (after they have already pretty much decided whether to hire you or not), take a moment and explain the background situation and then give them the letter. If they mention the background check before the end of the interview, just chuckle and joke around that you aren't Bin Laden after plastic surgery.

I've had an employer do a credit check on me before. I told them that I thought it was bullshit and that it isn't a valid justification. They said they'd do it anyways. It wasn't anything special either, it's was a sports store and I was only doing it as extra help over christmas.
Depending on the time frame after any infractions in your past you don't need to omit them. Anything after 5 years i believe is none ya business for misdimenors(sp) and sometimes 7 years for felonies. I don't know if that gives you any comfort. Take care

HEY NOS...

Keep your chin up.
Get this chance and make it,
or move one step closer to the day you do.

Either way you are your own man.

Most people today in civilized countries understand that human beings aren't "perfect". If you don't get the job cuz of your past, but I have some regreat. The less successful I turn out in life...the more I will blame my past[/I], don't let that put you down in any way. We all have made mistakes and if we have truly perfected ourselves we will eventually succeed. It might take time, so if you don't get this job, Karma will bring you an even better job in the future. Thank you so much for this.I copied, blew the copies up larger and pasted copies all around where I could see it and repeat it!
Thank you so much for everything you said and I think you are correct about not letting a rejections get me down in the dumps but as unfortunate as it sounds I just will. It will honestly take some time to take the weight off my shoulders even though it doesn’t seem like not getting the job is a big deal to most people, I will end up taking it hard (I would love to change that about me).
True, give it your best and if it doesn't pan out then it's time to move on. :) Good luck!
YES I may sit in the car right after and have a thought of what I could have done better or changed for the next interview, but then its forgotten and the game goes on!!!
All you can do is be yourself. Focus on your people skills and wow them that wayGod I wish you knew. Make eye contact, answer truthfully ALL OF YOU HAVE SAID THIS, HAS TO BE THE WAY TO GO WITHOUT A DOUGHT. I HAD ACTURALLY COSIDERED IT FOR A MOMENT BUT SCREW THAT NOW!yet tactfully, and be (I am very good at presentaions but maintaining a constant confidance is hard for me. It goes away when I am in an interview that is just me vs. others.... I HOPE YOU DONT MIND BUT I AM PUTTING THIS ALL OVER WHERE i CAN SEE IT BEFORE THE INTERVIEW AND EVEN TONIGHT.
I've been in your shoes! This is all great advice everyone has given. Be honest (AGAIN), but no need for detailsi UNDERSTAND 100%. I always gave a very vague and played down description of my past without lying. You would be surprised how often people won't care after they have met you If the personality is right!!!!. YA I GOT IT BALLS TO BONES. If you are friendly and polite and easy to talk to, you will get the job. I don’t think it is hard to image how well I can get inside a head and crawl around for a few days!Just be yourself and don't worry, there will be other opportunities. BETTER opportunities. I MEAN THAT IS SO VERY NICE OF YOU TO SAY AND I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT...AND YOU DONT EVEN KNOW THE CLUB OF BUSINESS OWNERS WHO WILL AT SOME POINT BE SORRY...I WILL SEE TO THAT!

Be honest. Many times it is not whats in your credit report or Background Check but how you respond to the questions.Years of learning things like this in colled.
