Double shoulder replacement

So the ortho just told me my arthritis is at the "end of the road" and the only thing left for me is double replacement. The problem is I'm only 46 and the equipment only lasts around 20 years so there's a good chance I'll need it again in the future. Does anyone have any experience with this? If I get the surgery, will I ever be able to lift the same again? Or is the gym as I know it over with?

That’s rough brother, I’m very sorry to hear that. I don’t have any experience with this, but I do encourage you to get a second and third opinion before ever going under the knife. Maybe some others can chime in.

Best of luck bro.

My first questions would be; how long has the pain been there and how bad is it? What forms of treatment have you had thus far? And what scans have been done so far?

Do a search as well because it's been discussed in the past as well as recently. Members have detailed the different types of "replacement" surgeries.

Man, that's brutal. Good luck OP.

So I started feeling a difference in my shoulders a few years ago, i did physical therapy for awhile with no real change. The stretches I learned are helpful but my ROM never improved. Over the last 6 months the pain has become much worse... so I went in expecting to hear torn rotator or shoulder tear. Instead was diagnosed with end stage glenohumeral osteoarthritis and a recommendation for double replacement. All this was based off x ray.

A friend had both done...one is fine and the other is still a mess 3 years after the surgery

Depending on the type of surgery you can keep working out or be limited to 25# on occasion, which is not every day. Go tot different Dr.s as many/most will only tell you about the type of surgery they do. I went with a partial replacement(ream and run) 10 years ago and was at the gym today. I don't train heavy any more today was upper body and chest was about 200# and back was in the mid 200 range . I mostly use machines. My replaced shoulder feels fine. The other is getting worn down and will probably need replacing in a few more years i will guess.

I had my right shoulder done a year ago(reverse replacement) and was planning on having the left one done after recovery. However, I started TB 500 for my recovery and the left one is fine now. Also, the doc feels if it starts to bother me again, we can use something similar to synvisc that they use in the knees, in the shoulder; which is quite successful in decreasing pain.

I would have them do an MRI now, as the doc going to have to do one anyway to determine what type of replacement is most appropriate.

What did they do when you had PT? Did they do manually stretching where you are laying on your back and they stretch you in all the different motions?

I just had mine done a few months ago. I have focused on conditioning more than power but it is coming back much quicker. My rotator cuff was not injured but the top of my bicep tendon was as well as my labrum. Use the bands, keep the diet in check and I have found that a stim machine definitely helps in recovery. best wishes

Had surgery on my right shoulder, due to multiple/random dislocations. Surgeon fucked up the surgery so I cant put my arm straight above my head (IE: No shoulder presses ever, no squats with traditional bar etc).

I do twice a year injections for my one shoulder of https://monovisc.ca/en Seems to help.

Similar situation.
Surgeon fucked up the initial labrum/rotator surgery and cannot really do much overhead work. Washing my hair with my left hand is difficult. I somehow have managed to still lift hard and heavy but I’ll need a full replacement in the next 5 years or so

First you need to realize that the shoulder replacement is not going to last 20 years if you lift weights. You’ll be lucky to get 10 years out of it. Furthermore, you need a shoulder specialist who is familiar with the latest technological advances and performs these surgeries often. There’s a doctor I’d recommend but he may not be in your location.

Depends on the replacement. A full traditional repelcamant wont last long if one keeps lifting. I had the Ream and Run done over 10 years ago and it works and feels fine. Also depends on how one wants to lift. I used the 100# DB's for a while after i recovered but my tendons would get inflamed some so i dropped it back down to only using 80's. Now it is mostly machines 100 pounds of so to a side. Back training is in the 200-250# range most sessions.

I'm hoping for stem cell treatments will become more accepted and approved. I'd rather build back normal tissue on the remaining scaffold rather than chop out hte original tissue and replace with material science.

Bioexcellerator in Colombia is making a killing right now.

I had a doctor tell me I needed a shoulder replacement at 26..I’m 37 now and haven’t had it replaced..shop around before you commit to that.

I had my right knee replaced when I was in my 20’s but it absolutely had to be done..but it’s a big deal, especially the shoulders.

Did the knee replacement have a negative impact on your leg training?

Dude... It sucks to hear that. I can only imagine that the fellas saying you'll need another replacement sooner if you continue lifting are probably right. However, with the way technology is advancing... hell, in 10 years you'll prob get some bionic shoulders and be doing overhead presses with 100s when you're 56. he he.

Try to look on the bright side, it may take a few years to come back and maybe never better than your best but definately better than you are now seeing as how you need the operation in the first place.
