Drug Testing in Pro MMA...

It is my understanding that some MMA organizations do conduct random testing for anaboics. It is obvious that the UFC does this periodically. I am fairly certain that Pride does not test based on the physical changes that I see fighters make when they make the switch from UFC to Pride (Don Frye for example 210 in the UFC, 245 with heavy water retention in Pride). What about the lower level shows such as Rage in the Cage down in AZ, or King of the Cage, etc. Any one who fights in these events or is closely affiliated with someone who fights these or similar events please give me a heads up. Feel free to PM me if you prefer to not post your affiliation in the public section of the forum. Thanks alot.

Some of them are starting to test as the sport gets bigger. Recently Kimo was going to fight for WFA in California and tested positive for Winstrol in his prefight physical.

As the sport grows the state athletic commissions are making stricter rules, how soon can fighters fight, things of that nature. The UFC policy is random testing and 100% for all title fights.

I believe most of the testing being done is a requirment of the individual states governing bodies of the sport.

I will never understand in my life why in the hell a fighter would use winstrol.

Not on topic, but still.

I know UFC is pretty strict on testing becasue they stripped Sylvia of the title and suspended him a few years back, same thing for Josh Barnett. I know PRIDE doesn't test in Japan but I wonder if the issue will come up on their USA shows. Because if it does they might be in some trouble because just look at guys like Coleman, Randleman, and Thompson.

I wish they'd just let the guys train and fight.

Screw the testing...it takes all the fun out of everything. lol....A guy has to take harsher stuff that clears the system more quickly ...so who does it really help?

LOL!I'm just starting to watch PRIDE when I can catch it on TV. I was able to run arcoss some tonight and was thinking, "Man, these guys are so much bigger/sturdier looking than UFC guys." DUH!

I know nothing about MMA, but I see so much of that UFC stuff on TV these days. I'm not sure I understand why they are drug tested? I remember when this stuff was just starting, I saw some show with a guy who was a pro and traveled the world fighting, and he was on both AAS and massive amounts of pain killers. I think he got hooked on pain killers and eventually quit. Some guy out of Vegas who was like #2 in the world or something.
Are these organizations trying to be legit like boxing and be governed by the states now? I guess I always put this sport in the same category as a tough man contest or maybe even pro wrestling(which I know is fake). Tell me the difference between pride and UFC. Which one was started by the two young guys out of Vegas?

The UFC is the Vegas organization and PRIDE is out of Japan. In the beginning UFC was basically a toughman competition but now they have testing, weight divisions, more rules and regulations to make the sport more legit.

Gotcha. That guy I mentioned was a Pride fighter if I recall. He was going over to Japan quite a bit.

You are talking about The Smashing Machine, a HBO documentary on Mark Kerr.

I would say that both PRIDE and the UFC are legit.

The UFC was started in 93 by Rorion Grace and Art Davie as a US version of Brazil's vale tudo fighting. It is now owned by the Ferttita brothers. They do test so they can be sanctioned by the atheletic commissions.

PRIDE was started in 97 in Japan and does not test. They are having their first US event this Sat.

Yeah Koevoet. That's exactly who it was. Mark Kerr. I remember when those Ferttita brothers bought it and were going to really promote it in Vegas. Are these Ferttita brothers related to the other Ferttita's out of Galveston,Tx?

Rage in the Cage

It appears that SOMETIMES they do RANDOM drug testing.....
that's information coming from a fighter involved in Rage in the Cage.

Dude. This Mark Kerr guy went through some serious shit weening himself off pain killers. The guy spent 4 days in a cardiac care unit(CCU). Holy shit. Great documentary. Sad story.
