Dusty Hanshaw: Thoughts and Prayers

I’ve been watching this play out. I donated and pray he continues moving forward. I don’t know Dusty but it’s obvious he’s a well respected guy by most people here.
Was always a huge fan of Dusty. I met him at the Arnold in 2019 incredibly nice and humble person and took the time to stop, take pictures and talk to everybody that approached him as he was walking round.

This whole scenario concerning Dusty Hanshaw has really driven home the fact of a few things in my mind in the bodybuilding world. Ninety eight percent of you are good solid people who came in and gave your well wishes to a guy "Dusty" who got a really bad hand dealt to him in this situation. The guy has given solid content and instruction over the years and people can tell he is a genuine person (which he is). But there is no doubt at all that there is a small percentage of people in bodybuilding that are horribly damaged, 'messed in the head" people. In the last 3 weeks Ive gotten ripped on social media, I've gotten shredded in PM's, and accused of being a flat out liar in this situation concerning Dusty. A lot of you guys saw that member of this board last weekend come in here and leave about 6 posts ripping Dusty and I as being fu*&ing liars and basically he could not hack that this was not about bodybuilding drugs. The mods deleted it but the same guy went off on me in Instagram PM's....that this "had to be from bodybuilding drugs and I am a F*&king liar"....a member of this board....I showed my wife and some close friends some of these various texts and it causes you to shake your head at how truly messed up a small percentage of people in this sport are. I appreciate the people in this endeavor who have their head on straight as a lot of you on this thread have shown.

Of all people, you should know there are many very insecure, angry or just downright depressed and sad folks in this industry who almost thrive on others' misery. It's sad but you can't change it. You probably did more than anyone else to help Dusty and bring it to the attention of the rest of the world. And you know what, even if it was drug related... Who fuckin cares? I doubt you'd care any less, would you?

You know what you did, take solace in that and fuck the rest of em. You did the right thing, you don't have to explain a goddamn thing to anyone

I've been reading the updates and am glad to hear Dusty's slowly doing better. It surprises me how some people could be so negative (saying this based on people making stark remarks on social media), post things without any base and simply use the situation to put a human being down when he's going through such a dramatic and scary moment. The reality is, this can happen to anyone. We're really just candles in the wind. I hope these people that have been bashing him never find themselves in the same position because they will regret having kicked a man when he was down.

And leave it up to you with that grandiose ego you have to come in and think your word is stamped in stone and a fact because you state it. Last time you did that you came in and called me an idiot about the Luke Sandoe situation. Well when the truth panned out who quickly looked like the idiot in that case (you did). I am not making anything up and I have no reason to. He is at the Mayo clinic, they diagnosed him with Eosinophilic Esophagitis, so take it up with them....... You also might want to study Aspergers relentlessly because every freaking post you leave on this board is a caustic, argumentative, sarcastic post where you cannot even discuss things as an adult where someone of your knowledge of certain things should warrant it. Its pathetic to be honest.

Mayo Clinic: A valve-like structure called the lower esophageal sphincter usually keeps the acidic contents of the stomach out of the esophagus. If this valve opens when it shouldn't or doesn't close properly, the contents of the stomach may back up into the esophagus (gastroesophageal reflux). Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which this backflow of acid is a frequent or ongoing problem. A complication of GERD is chronic inflammation and tissue damage in the esophagus.

Eosinophilic esophagitis: Eosinophils (e-o-SIN-o-fils) are white blood cells that play a key role in allergic reactions. Eosinophilic esophagitis occurs with a high concentration of these white blood cells in the esophagus, most likely in response to an allergy-causing agent (allergen) or acid reflux or both.

In many cases, this type of esophagitis may be triggered by foods such as milk, eggs, wheat, soy, peanuts, beans, rye and beef. However, conventional allergy testing does not reliably identify these culprit foods.

Note to everyone: People are asking me questions and I am giving my opinion. My opinion is based on what I have heard from his ex-wife and what I have heard from the doctors treating him. Right after this happened I asked questions of his ex-wife because this all came from left field. I found out he has had chronic heart burn and other digestive symptoms for many many years. He uses Onion powder on everything as you guys have seen in his videos. I had no idea of this previously. So my opinion is simply "some major damage/erosion/acid reflux has been happening for quite a long time (years).....and the straw that broke the camels back happened"....It is what it is and I care more about Dusty getting better and moreso his disposition when the realization that he has been gone for 3 plus weeks and how his life has changed pretty dramatically than this kind of BS
Yep, this is from UpToDate, the premier reference for us physicians.

"A subset of patients with Boerhaave syndrome has underlying eosinophilic esophagitis.

The development of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) reflects an imbalance between injurious or symptom-eliciting factors (reflux events, acidity of refluxate, esophageal hypersensitivity) and defensive factors (esophageal acid clearance, mucosal integrity) [2]. The extent of symptoms and of mucosal injury is proportional to the frequency of reflux events, the duration of mucosal acidification, and the caustic potency of refluxed fluid.

Esophagitis results from cytokine-triggered inflammation rather than a direct chemical effect of prolonged exposure to acid, pepsin, and bile on the esophageal epithelium [3-5]. This is substantiated by the observation that histopathological events in the development of esophagitis (lymphocytic inflammation, dilated intercellular spaces) occur deep in the epithelium, not at the luminal surface, and that regenerative changes (basal cell hyperplasia, papillary elongation) are initiated prior to the development of surface necrosis that was formerly hypothesized as the stimulus for those changes. Cytokine-triggered inflammation may also cause alterations in esophageal sensitivity in the absence of esophagitis."

I see a lot of BBers with GERD. I had it pretty bad some years ago. This was from over feeding trying to put on mass. Do that for years and years and it can really go sideways. Really sorry to see Dusty suffering through this. He seems otherwise to be a strong healthy guy. Chances are he will make a dramatic recovery and probably have to change things a bit.

Dusty is off the vent now and totally conscious, talking and carrying on conversations?

Its really a can to string to can situation maldorf. Basically there is extremely limited visitation because of covid and the ICU....so Dusty's mother is mainly the only person who can visit him (mainly but when she is gone someone else can come in). She reports what the doctors tell her and Dustys condition to Matt (Dustys longtime training partner and friend) and Matt lets us know.

As of yesterday

ICU still at that moment
Off vent and everything else
Still not totally lucid (but coming around fairly quickly)...maybe another day or two it was reported to me.
Will have to see GI specialist when better and that will be a longterm situation

Dang, that's a long time in ICU. I spent 5 days in cardiac ICU and watched 2 patients in the neighboring room pass away. I thought I might not make it out.

Once he gets out of ICU and into a regular room with telemetry, where he can get up and start moving, he will start to recover more. Being in the hospital during covid does suck. After my surgery I wasn't even able to have my girls visit me. Just my wife, and only right after surgery. Youre alone much of the time.

I'm rooting for Dusty and know that his recovery will be good since he is a bodybuilder with great discipline and a strong work ethic. IMO bodybuilders should recover faster than the general public. The only thing I had to do was try to slow down how hard I pushed myself.

Thanks for the update!

Thanks for all the updates, definitely didn't owe us any info....so again thank you

First off, nothing but well wishes going your way Dusty. The most impressive thing about you is your individuality and will. For that alone, you will recover. Whether that continues to be as a 300 pound monster or a streamlined version, it doesn't matter as you have an audience that appreciates your contributions. Heal quickly mate.

Fuck, I hope Dusty will be ok. He was the first person on here to give me solid, real advice when I joined this board. He always came across as a genuinely good person who cared and that’s really rare these days.

F**K that guy.

Well wishes to dusty! I met him at the Mr. Olympia convention in 2016, he was really cool and down to earth. Was hospitalized twice last year during the pandemic. The first time i got zero visitors and the 2nd time i got 1 visitor. Its pretty rough.

They wouldnt even let my wife wait for me in the hospital while I had my 8 hour surgery. I think she just came home and left me there.

Ron Partlow gave an an update on Dusty on today's It's Just Bodybuilding, which he received a few days ago.

Dusty has been moved out of ICU into the general wing and has started physiotherapy, like learning to swallow again. He was using ice chips and water and did well at it the first day. As far as Ron knows he's awake now but is not aware that a month has passed and that he was unconscious for over 3 weeks. He has a tracheotomy with a speaking valve and can somewhat talk but it's laborious since his breathing isn't 100%. There is still some pneumonia but the vent (ventilator?) is way down. Ron is expecting another update today, June 9. He's still on a lot of meds but has cracked a few jokes.

After this, he's gonna know who his true life friends are to this point in life. Glad he is continuing to get better day to day. He has a hell of a lot of us behind him for support and cheering him on. It's good to hear he is joking around....helps a lot of us to be at ease a little more.
