elbow on dips

when I am doing dips(eccentric part) on some days I get something snatching/moving in the elbow. I suspect it is a ligament but it could be something else. I have had tennis elbow before in my other hand so I don't think this is the case this time and I did similar exercises but it is still there. Also get this on tricep pushdowns even though I try to warm up the elbows.

What exercises would you suggest or something else to to take care of it?

Did you sprain that elbow at one time? Sounds like maybe the ligaments are stretched out there and lose. I don't know what you can do to help that. I sprained my wrist once and it has been lose ever since. Have you tried an elbow sleeve?

I could've,noticed it bit more pronounced recently, sometimes it goes away, but must take care of it

was thinking about a slive for the elbow but I think it will be better to fix it with rehabbing exercises or something first

also when I try to massage the area I do get slight pins and needles so that might be a nerve or something I need to floss, not sure, but it is not in the other arm/elbow area

could be golfers elbow. flossing will help. look into getting a therabar as well

am I supposed to use that therabar to strengthen my grip?

it doesn't strengthen the grip per se....its a physical therapy tool that works the elbow extensors and flexors to help with lateral and medial epicondylitis

Typically it's the grip strength that's the problem. Forearms too tight (from gripping too hard) will cause the epicondylitis.

Stripping or flossing the forearm muscles will help to alleviate elbow pain. Theres also a device you can buy called "Arm Aid". Works really well, use regularly.
Also, changing technique up... sometimes its helps to cue your muscles differently when lifting, thinking "lead with the elbow", rather than "pull with your hands"

Dips always have fucked me up. The shoulder catching runs down to my elbows. I do like the dip machine, because I can get a better angle that does fuck my shoulders up

sounds like your dipping days are over....sadly.

I used to love dips....4 plates for reps....now I can do them
at all....its the negative portion of the movement...feels like
my elbows are going to explode at any second....

I can do some machine dips with lower weight for very high reps...

I haven't done a free weight dip in over 10 years.

The old school fat dip bars that angle out are allot easier on my elbows and shoulders. Most gyms don't have these anymore though...

Same here, loved doing weighted dips. Haven't done any for quite some time now. My ego superseded long-term tendon and ligament flexibility. Skull crushers are just as painful.

I had to switch over to doing dips on suspended gymnastic rings to allow more free motion of the shoulder and elbow joint.

If ligaments are stretched, prolotherapy by a competent doctor can tighten them back up. I had that done on my lower lumbar ligaments after a disc herniation. It took about four treatments over time and they tightened right back up.

for now I think it is a nerve that needs flossing.. fixed it for a while by massaging and trying to floss it..

It appeared again today but it is not on every rep ,trying to grip stronger with tension on the elbows as well.

right now I just tried to massage the area again and on wrist rotatotion felt the pins and needles which I believe is the nerve that is doing it.

I try to play it safe.. It is not painful but I'd rather address it sooner rather than later.. I don't think my dipping days are over and do not intend to stop this awesome exercise.

after the massage the pins and needles disappeared will see how it is tomorrow

any ideas how to floss(tried the general knowledge logic) this particular nerve or what else to do to fix it? It is on the left elbow,on the inner part and the thingy is not even there anymore (between the 2 bones inner part left elbow) after massaging it and pins and needles disappeared.

There must be a better wway to fix it permanently instead of having to massage/floss the area before every workout is what I am saying

I would start by stretching your triceps more frequently. Could be connective tight connective tissue shifting out of its normal alignment.

I had the same problem. Took a year off of doing the movement and now I am good to go.

see the thing is.....and what you don't understand is, this IS the beginning
of the end of the movement for you...

of course you don't want to stop doing them...
of course you feel you can JUST HEAL RIGHT UP...

what you don't understand is.....where you are going, many of us
have already been....

it STARTS with the elbow..."heal up" a few times..(which it will
never go away, not even surgery), then your wrists go....then your
shoulder just wont move like that anymore....then after many times
of going through the cycle....it will be too late.

I didn't want to stop the movement either....took me 3 or 4 more years of
pain before I said "fuck it I just cant do it anymore"....because you'll find
just continuing doing certain movements will now hinder OTHER movements.
you are ahead of the game now....just use your head.

AND.....AND.....I still try to do them....I get up there, suspend myself
above the bars, take a deep breath, slowly start the first rep, then I
remember WHY I DONT DO THEM.....

:D

what could it be that is causing the problem then? there is no pain but something moves inside

I don't do movemens like crossfitters do and no heavy ass weights.

will channels like smashwerx be of any use as these are useful for crossfitters injuries?

should I buy a pair of elbow sleeves and which ones? will it prevent/heal it somehow by warming up or something?

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your elbow.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I have never had elbow problems
with dips and I have done them with some pretty respectable weight.
Never had a problem with pushdowns either. Lucky again I guess.
And lying extensions . . . again, never a problem. I always warm up
and use good form and always control the weight . . . never let the
weight control me.

If you are doing dips for your triceps, you might consider using a dip
machine. Different stressors. Also, if we are talking triceps here (not
dips for chest) you might consider lying reverse grip (curl) triceps
extensions. Start with a very light weight and slowly add weight
as you learn, become accustomed to the exercise / movement as this
one takes some ‘learning’ but I have found it to be very gentile on the
elbows and great for your triceps. (I can explain how to get the
most out of these if you like.) This may just be a matter of finding an
exercise or two that causes you no problems.

In the end, when it is all said and done, if an exercise causes you joint
pain or other joint issues, I would avoid it. Typically it never gets better,
only gets worse, potentially effecting other exercises, then you are really
screwed, especially when it comes to elbows as they are used in so many
upper body exercises.

Hope this helps.

liftinglarge.com has some excellent knee and elbow sleeves...

yes....its worth a try....I don't know how old you are, but when I see
some of these kids go straight to 225 on the bench for like 4 reps...I cant
stand watching that shit....it actually hurts ME!!!!.....

PROPER WARM-UPS....and knowing WHEN you are properly warmed up
is the key to saving joints.....that and say bye-bye to anything heavy.

just like anything else......learning when to say when is extremely
important...
