Expired gear myths

I have long heard that expired gear still works but degrades slightly. Is this just another bro myth. I have vials that expired 3 years ago. I don’t know how individual vials could of got weaker. If it Can degrade how on earth would you ever judge what the strength has dropped down to?

You don’t, you just use it.

In reality you never knew what the strength of it was in the first place anyway.

Also this idea of gear having dates on it, did the FDA decide when it expired?

Don’t overthink it....

There was a big study on expired drugs (all pills I think) that found that they lost about 1% potency per year or something on average, I forget the details but it was a surprisingly small amount.

The gear doesn’t expire till the carrier oil gets infected with bacteria. Till it gets cloudy or changes color it’s still good.

I’ve used expired vet gear from mexico several years ago because that was all I had. Denkall and ttokkyo if anyone remembers those brands from back in the day. They were expired 10years and still worked great.
Denkall, QV, and SYD were my staples back then.

I've used tons of stuff past expiration dates because I tend to stock up and then life gets in the way. Never an issue but I ensure I store it in a cool, dark location.

If it was left in regular sunlight I'd figure vials would degrade.... guess the gear was on the display shelf lol.

Like bad rad mentions gear should always be kept in cool dry place. Certainly do not keep gear in bathroom for example.

ripriot mentioned bacteria, and if there's a possibility that bacteria crept into a sealed vial then that gear was suspect to begin with.

Ultimately I pay no attention to the expiration date that some bottles have.

Lol well it matters on the drug and the formulation of course. You can't make a generalization like that and I find it extremely improbable that any scientist made a generalization across all drugs like that to get an average degradation rate.

Even if they did draw that conclusion it would be not be extremely useful or rather should I say, useful at all.

i assume for hgh and peptides the expiration date could be significant.
for orals or inj. gear probably less

I worked in the pharma industry in QA/QC where we monitored stability data. Most products can be used effectively well past the expiration date. As M@NU stated though, peptides would be an exception.

I have some Pharmacom tren ace amps that I believe are expired. If I ever grow the balls to try tren I’ll use them. Not sure why I even have them!

I am good friends with a recently retired pain management specialist (Palliative care, a MD).
When I asked her this question, she said expirations dates on most meds (not live vaccines)
are very very conservative. Most will last years if stored in a cool dark environment.

The only time I have had an issue with expirations dates is the inverse of what most people
experience. I had crystals in my test, cloudy, just one bottle, just once, and that bottle was
way within the expiration date. And all I did to bring it back into solution was put it into a cup
hot tap water. Cleared it right up.

What about the cheaper carrier oils like GSO & CSO? I thought they don’t have a long shelf life so the oil is more likely to go rancid over time. Not saying their bad when they expire. Just that the oil will eventually go rancid. Any input?

It was a huge study on many different expired drugs, yes there was a huge variance in the amount lost per year but the vast majority of them were extremely low. I absolutely can make generalizations from data, I even said that it was an estimation, and I never said there weren't outliers... But my point, as I stated in my original post, was that most of the values were surprisingly low relative to the expiration date of the drug (almost always 1 year for no reason), around 1% really stuck out as an average.

It was a published study that made into the media and I've heard talked about by doctors many times, I'm sure you can find it.

This reminds me of the Lemons on Wolf of Wallstreet

I've heard something like three percent

Wondering myself about my finasteride expiring from 2012 and other oils, supplements like 5 htp expiring in 2012

I remember seeing this study, we actually did a little write up on this a while back, but I remember referencing the military study done on the expired drugs etc. The rate of degradation was almost neglagible if I remember correctly after like 5-10 years on oral tablets? I believe they specified that these results were if the products were kept in cool dry place, obviously if its in heat/cold or sunlight its going to make a bigger difference in the degradation. I wonder how the injectable drugs stacked up? As someone else mentioned, you'd think the carrier solvent used would make a difference in the injects maybe? .. I would be really interested to see the degradation rate though, it would be interesting to see for example how a bottle of Sustenon 250 would test out after 1,5,10, and 20 years?
I wonder how you could set up a test like that with an injectable? because it seems that you would have to run the analysis on the same exact bottle of test at 1 year, 5 years and 10 years etc to really see an accurate result. Instead of having 5 bottles produced at the same time, and sending the one vial to test at year 1, then another new vial at year 5 etc, every time you would be testing a fresh unopened vial. I wonder how the air, chance of bacteria etc would effect the potency of the vial if you literally pulled from the same 10mL vial for all the testing over 10+ years? Something to think about ...
