"Fact or Fiction"

"Fact or Fiction" attempts to find the truth behind some bodybuilding legends. Did Arnold inject silicone into his calves? No. Does Jay Cutler really eat 10 times a day and wake up three times during the night to eat? Yes (so maybe it's not just the GH making his gut big, but it still doesn't explain the melon!).

Here's a good one: Did Mentzer put on all his size doing just one set per bodypart? No! While competing, Mike stated in articles he performed 4-6 working sets per bodypart, though observers of his workouts claim the number was more like 6-10 working sets. It wasn't until just before his death Mentzer went cuckoo with his "one set to failure" kick, and it should be noted the ability of one such set to completely exhaust muscles remains theoretical.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, it's true Roy Callender performed 65-80 sets for big bodyparts, 40 sets for stuff like arms, and often spent more than six hours a day in the gym!

Also, supposedly true is the fact that Steve Michalik purchased dead monkeys from pre-med and pre-vet students so he could eat their brains in hopes of elevating his GH levels — yum-yum!

well.. there are many legends that persist to this day.. johnny fuller doing 10 sets of 32 reps with 8 sets per bodybpart.. that was a complete b.s. interview and johnny admitted later that it was.. he said he needed the publicity.. callander the same way.. did arnold have calf implants.. no one knows and those who do aint talking.. but, many in the "know" insist he does.. and i would never belive much of what michalik has written.. he did train insane.. but, all the b.s about his roid abuse ecte ct makes him a liar in my book.. as for serge nubret.. he did the workouts he states.. i saw him do chest at the golds in south miami 6 or 7 years ago.. and he did pretty much what he always wrote about..

I have heard the last one so many times and IS supposedly true about Steve Michalik eating the Monkey brains. LOL

Sorry for replying to a post directed at you Bro, but all I can say is I dont know all about Metzners training facts but Dorian Yates trained 1 set to failure.

dorians training has always been a little confusing.. one will say a max of two sets per exercise.. then he will say one set.. as dorian progressed he did do less volume.. there is no doubt about that.. as for mentzer.. his ideas in the years before he died were not what he did while competeing.. i have heard from many that he did what would be a moderate volume today.. in other words 6- 10 working sets for the larger muscle groups and little less for the smaller.. yet back then that was notable since many were still doing twenty sets a bodypart.. even musclemag international followed him through a series of workouts back in the early 80's and they were not the one set to failure he preached in years after.. mentzer was a "marketing" type of guy and he made a decent living in the end preaching the hit program.. does it work? well for many it does.. is it what mentzer did in his competive days?.. no way.. when he started to space bodyparts two weeks a part.. with only one set at that.. forget it.. he went overboard..

...

And a long long time ago I read a not too bad article written by Dorian. In it he stated he had reduced his volume as he developed, but he never recommended starting out with ultra low volume. In fact, for beginners to intermediate he recommended a very boring and standard routine, and said it was only appropriate to start stripping back volume when you reached an advanced stage.

What works for someone now, might not be what worked to get them there.

True or false - Lee Priest was prescribed GH and other medications from a fairly young age under the guise of treating his lack of height? IronMike ;)
