there was a period about 10 years ago in which some supplement companies were doing "amino spiking". The profit margins on protein, especially whey is extremely thin. Companies were significantly underdosing the amount of protein in their tubs compared to what they were reporting, and then using branched chain amino acids to fill in for the rest of the missing whey. So a guy would toss a scoop of protein in a shaker thinking he was getting 25-30g of protein, and he was getting maybe 10. unfortunately a lot of reputable companies were doing it, Gaspari was one of the worst offenders. A trustworthy company will have 3rd party testing done on their products for transparency to the consumer that what they say is in their products is actually in their products. There was also a time where some companies were selling things marketed as "natty test boosters" and they actually had prohormones or other type of banned substances. The consumer literally didn't know they were taking. In '05, in Afghanistan we had a ton of dudes taking things marked as a natural test booster, and it was literally epistane, and they were on the shit for 6 straight months, no idea what it really was.
