Finasteride/Dutasteride and Heart/General Health

My brother started finasteride years ago to prevent hair loss which runs in our family. Given my history of dilated cardiomyopathy from AAS, and potentially having my Crohns/Colitis caused by accutane, I am always hesitant of drugs now and just said I'd stick with just getting a hair transplant if need be down the road.

Well, a couple years later and I'm definitely starting to lose my hair. Just getting to the point where it's becoming difficult to cover it up. Please no "just shave it off" responses lol. And it seems like hair transplant doctors still want you to be on these meds even with a transplant.

I'm wondering what your experiences with finasteride/dutasteride are in terms of side effects and if you know anyone who has had serious issues with it.

I just found these two studies which I was surprised by
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=(finasteride[Title])+AND+heart[Title]

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=(finasteride[Title])+AND+cardiac[Title]

which seem to indicate cardiac benefits from 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, which I've not heard of before.

I'm planning on having kids in about 3 years and I've read fin/dut can decrease sperm motility and quality so on top of being suppressed from my current TRT I'd be concerned about that as well. Have any of you had kids while taking these meds? Have you run into any issues?

Thanks for the input

Been on finasteride over 15 years...

when on it because i was receding bad and going bald.

stopped me shedding and even made my hair thicker.. no doubt I would be bald today if not for it. but i have all my hair early 40s.

seriously fucked my ability to get quality boners... i have to use a lot of viagra and cialsis. Hasn't really affected libido just difficult to get real hard naturally.
so it screws your dick up. also watery cum.

maybe also responsibe for depression here and there..but i cant prove that.

if u value hair and dont mind having to use vagra... use it. it works great for hair.

if u value ur dick and being able to get hards on whenever... stay the fuck away.

peace

Interesting, thanks for the input. Did you notice that sexual issue right away, or was it a slow process over the last 15 years? If it was over the last 15 years I would wonder if it's due to aging, but if you noticed it soon after starting the finasteride then it would certainly seem to be more highly correlated.

Definitely not ok with a broken dick lol and concerned about the sperm quality too especially if planning on having kids in a few years

Did you have any hint of depression beforehand?

I remember noticing the watery cum pretty much straight away and I think the sexual sides started about 6 weeks in.

Depression... not really much before... I'm pretty sure finasteride has contributed to depression... could also be lack of motivation too.

All I know is my boners have never been like they were before I started it.

Maybe it doesn't happen to everyone... but lack of DHT definately is no good for men.

Besides being unbelievable for your hair the stuff is poison.

Damn, yea I value my hair but that doesn't sound worth it. I guess you're too afraid to lose your hair at this point to come off of it? Ever consider a transplant or even a hairpiece in order to stop having those sexual side effects?

Are you taking 1mg/day?

If anything I'd now consider taking it for the potential heart benefits shown in that one study I posted, but I don't think I'd make that decision based on one study. Surprised it hasn't been studied for that further.

At 42 I have been on finasteride for about 5 years. No noticeable negative side affects.

Yeah. Given what we know about androgens and heart health, it makes sense limiting dht could help.

I took 1mg a day for years....

last few months ive cut back to .5mg every 3rd day... cum isnt watery anymore, noticing a little shedding.. we will see.

but 1mg was definately great for hair

some guys have no issues like poster above. only way to know is to try it. u will know after a few months.

As a urologist, obviously a lot of my patients take it. it's hit or miss with the sexual side effects, which makes sense based on the studies. but for the guys that DO get the sexual issues, it's a big deal. If someone comes to me on fina/duta and doesn't have a truly large prostate (over 50 grams or so), then I try and get them off of those drugs.

Some urologists will put guys on fina/duta just to bring the PSA down - but if cancer has already been ruled out, and they're not really having BPH symptoms, then there's zero need to artifically reduce the PSA. It's just a mind game.

as far as heart health, I need to look in to that. I wonder if some of the benefits derive from estradiol going UP since less is reduced to DHT - and we know estradiol has CV benefits (to a point).

They'd have to control for estradiol in one arm of the study to get a better idea.

20 year user here. Started at age 23, my hair was starting to go fast. It absolutely stopped the loss and i still have good head of hair today.

Definitely can cause libido and erection issues. Its manageable and comes and goes in waves.

Its a difficult decision for sure. If your in your 30s id say go for it. 20s I would advise against.

DO NOT TAKE DUTASTERIDE!

Why not duta??

Yea, I suppose I could always try it for a few months and see. I feel like it might just be subtle though, and perhaps too subtle to make definitive decisions about it. Like my brother has been on 1mg finasteride for a few years. He sleeps around a lot and generally doesn't have issues but has definitely mentioned a few instances of ED depending on the situation and he looks a little softer than usual. Hard to really tell. Definitely no depression though. Oh and he also mentioned he feels like his unit is a little smaller, which I'm sure it's not but I could see why he might perceive that if he is only getting say 90% erections or something like that.

My dad got gyno on dutasteride which is obviously much more powerful. I had pubertal gyno mostly removed years ago but would be mortified if it came back from these drugs (as I believe the surgeon left just a very small amount of gland remaining).

Have you been on some form of testosterone during your time using the finasteride? How about an aromatase inhibitor?

So you've been taking finasteride this whole time then, not dutasteride?

If you happen to find out more about the heart health aspect I'd be very interested to hear what you find. It's the first time I've ever seen that brought up

As far as the estrogen, have you found estrogen levels raise much in patients taking fin/dut? The mechanism makes sense, but I haven't seen anyone's full blood work on these drugs.

Also as far as estrogen being good for heart health, I'm not so sure for men, at least past normal values:

i reakon i got a little gyno from it too... and i also agree with ur bro about dick being a bit smaller... this is no joke.

yes ive been on test while on it

i remember doing a sustanon cycle before being on fina and my hair was falling out fast... since being on fina zero shedding on test.

hard decision bro...i dont regret it cause like i said i would of had no hair by late 20's... now im in 40's with full head...

having said that one day ill stop using it and im looking forward to it.

My experience with steroids and other supplements has helped me come to the conclusion that EVERYTHING comes down to your genetics. I have been taking .5mg of Dutas ed for 5 years and have no side effects. I can get and stay lean all year round with a shit diet, no problems with motivation, pretty much always in a good mood happy go lucky, got my MBA while working full time and starting a business (no brain fog) and no problems with ED.

I dont care what you do or what others do. I am not here to advocate for the use of fin/dutas I am just sharing my experience.

Its just like anything though if your predisposed to depression, erectile dysfunction etc then maybe it will increase the chances for the negative sides.

I appreciate the feedback. I could always just on it to "try it" but then I know I'll never want to go off of it for fear of then subsequently losing a ton of hair. Kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of ordeal.

I have a consult with hair transplant doctor, Dr. Voires, in a few weeks. I'll ask his opinion on how necessary he feels it is for those planning on a transplant.

Most hair transplant doctors will put you on finasteride before operating, otherwise you'll just continue to lose the non-transplanted hair. So keep that in mind.

I've been taking 1.25mg (cut a 5mg tablet into quarters) everyday as a natural for 2 years now and I wish I had started earlier, honestly. One of the best decisions I've ever made.

No further hairloss and my hairline has even improved a little bit. As far as side effects - my libido went down maybe 20% but it's not a big deal .. it's a bit liberating to not think about sex 24/7.

I had waffled back & forth for years about taking it but I came to the realization - I might have sex a few times a week but being bald or having a fucked-up hairline is nonstop. After that, the decision to get on it was an easy one

Yea I know most of the doctors want you to take it, so that is definitely something to consider as well.

And I agree, if anything I want my libido to be lower. It can be really distracting having it raging all the time, so I'm fine with it being lower.

What I'm not fine with is not being able to get hard when the time comes, feeling depressed, or getting gyno. Or any other potential unknown health detriments from it. Can only imagine how awful I'd feel if I ended up being one of the the few with high grade prostate cancer (studies seem to show a ~25% increased rate of high grade prostate cancer in those using 5-alpha reductase inhibitors) all because I wanted better hair. Or ended up in a position years down the road where I start feeling depressed and want to try coming off, but am too scared to due to loss of hair I'll be sure to experience.
