First North American Athlete Tests Positive for HGH
The four-year suspension of Matt Socholotiuk, the rookie running back at Ontario's University of Waterloo who was revealed this week to have tested positive for human growth hormone, has been reduced to three years. Socholotiuk is believed to be the first North American athlete caught with HGH in his system. “We have suspected HGH has been abused by certain athletes in an effort to cheat,” Paul Melia, president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, said in a statement. “We now have the proof. However, it is alarming and of great concern that its presence has been detected with our young athletes.”

Only five athletes in the world have been caught and sanctioned for HGH use, according to the Toronto Sun.

Socholotiuk was tested in March, along with 61 other members of the Waterloo Warriors. After nine players were suspected of doping infractions in what has been billed as the biggest steroids investigation in Canadian university history, Waterloo suspended its football program in June for one year.

Socholotiuk, who is not registered to attend Waterloo this semester, was quoted as saying at a hearing decision on his suspension that the blood test for HGH is “very unreliable.” He also reportedly told an arbitrator that he didn’t know the testosterone he took was banned, and that he feels “ashamed and embarrassed.”

The breakthrough findings should prompt professional sports leagues to impose HGH testing, Melia told Toronto Star reporter Robert Cribb. They should “accept their social responsibility and take full advantage of the powerful role they can play in the fight against doping in sports. They need to stop sending a mixed message to our children ... that it is okay to cheat and to risk your health to set records and pursue winning at any cost.”

The Canadian Football League recently became the first professional sports league in North America to test for HGH, and Major League Baseball implemented HGH testing at the minor-league level in July.

How is this even possible. Isnt the only way to test is elevated IGF levels. So he must have shot a few iu's right before the bloodtest or did a high 15iu+ dose within 24hrs of the test.

Thats what i always thought???

This whole GH test thing stinks of BS. Since its a naturally produced hormone. In the body you would have to establish a cut off and that isn't going to account for genetic abnormalities. Testosterone is tested via test / epi ratio and given an accepted cutoff. There is too much shrouding and mystery behind this test. Just another way government and sanctioning bodies are wasting money.

I think they paid the kid to fail the test, or just faked the whole thing and paid the kid to go along with it. Enough money would keep him quiet. There is a LOT of pressure on the MLB and NFL to test for GH, and there are politicians involved. This is exactly the kind of thing they need to pressure them into testing.

What a joke.

This sux everyone tht i know above 40 yrs old does it.and if ur 40 and older u have tht right th gov shold f--- off be smart be good

I didn't realize that GH testing had finally become a reality. If the tests are solid and If they begin to TRULY, randomly test athletes the entire amateur & pro sports world is going to unravel.

Gh like test are naturally occuring so without elevated levels I dont see how its possible to test for it. With test if they get really picky i guess they could check LH levels and see they are off even though test is in range(say someone using like 75-100mg test) but thats about it. Plus legally they would never be allowed to get away with that. But with GH there should be no sign other than IGF levels.

tested positive for human growth hormone

It's not uncommon for reporters to get a story wrong, including misunderstanding actual details. GH for instance may have quite possibly been suspect due to raised IGF-1 levels - something they can test for, as there is no other reasonable scientific method to test for the actual protien itself (none I've ever heard of). Of course, these days various IGF peptides can also create many similar GH results, including raising IGF levels.

"Doping with growth hormone, a banned substance in sports, can be detected by changes to natural forms of growth hormone in the blood, and the test’s detection value does not decrease with simultaneous use of testosterone, according to a new study. The results will be presented Tuesday, June 16, at The Endocrine Society’s 90th Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

Surveys have shown that athletes who cheat at trying to improve sports performance commonly use growth hormone and testosterone together, said the study’s lead author, Anne Nelson, PhD. She is project manager of the Growth Hormone Doping Project of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia. However, traditionally it has been difficult to detect growth hormone doping because the drug is indistinguishable from the growth hormone that the body naturally makes.

Their test measures different forms of growth hormone, called isoforms, which the pituitary gland releases into the body’s circulation. After someone takes growth hormone, there is a change in the relative amounts, or ratio, of the two main circulating isoforms: 20 and 22 kilodaltons (K). A large increase in the ratio of 22K to 20K is the basis for detection of growth hormone doping.Nelson and her colleagues showed how the isoform ratio changed after giving growth hormone to young recreational athletes who volunteered for the study. In a carefully controlled study, they gave 95 adult volunteers daily injections of either growth hormone or an inactive placebo for 8 weeks. Some of the men received testosterone alone or in combination with growth hormone.

A rapid change occurred in the ratio of the 22K to 20K isoforms in blood samples after administration of growth hormone, according to Nelson. This change was greater in men than women, and use of testosterone did not affect it. However, the change in the ratio returned to pretreatment levels by 36 hours after treatment.
“This is a useful method for detection of growth hormone,” Nelson said. “Although the short time window of detection may limit the success rate of the test during competition, the isoform test is most likely to be effective when used in precompetition testing and in no-advance-notice out-of-competition testing.”

Information gained from the study will help the researchers fine-tune the robustness of the test, she added. Currently, the isoform ratios were greater in athletes who received growth hormone, compared with those who did not, about 55 percent of the time.
Growth hormone doping is thought to be widespread among athletes, according to Nelson. “It is important that a test for growth hormone doping is in place to deter the abuse of growth hormone,” she said.

The study was funded by the World Anti-Doping Agency and the Australian Government Anti-Doping Research Program. Novo Nordisk supplied the growth hormone for this study, and Organon provided testosterone."

I also thought this was not possible. If it is, the major leagues will probably follow suit soon.

Just another example of governments wasting tax payer dollars. My opinion is that all these anti-steriod people are going to roo the day they pushed this as far as they have. Most people don't realize how much money professional sports teams contribute to the local economys, even those cities that don't have a team. Sports memorbilia, bars and restaurants, clothing, pay-per-views, ticket sales, concessions, etc. etc. etc. ALL of which taxes are paid upon. If the level of play in pro sports becomes less than what it is, people will just plain lose interest. Don't think so, then why do pro sports generate more revenue than college when college has 10 times the number of athletes and teams. Not to mention, people will stop electing these morons into office for not tackling the real problems this country is facing. Believe me, steroids are the last thing that any cop, politician or major sports organinazation should be concerned about.

You're preaching to the choir.

The test is real. The detection window is extremely limited. A significant percentage of the waterloo football team tested positive for steroid cheating under the wada rules and the University has suspended the football program as a result.

not wrong, they got him for GH

A large increase in the ratio of 22K to 20K is the basis for detection of growth hormone doping.

Very interesting. Now it would be nice to know what the actual protocol was. "A large increase" was detected via what method of administration and what scale/amount of GH per? The 36 hour window is also good to know.

they tested the whole team due to the fact that two players from the team the year before were caught selling gear. they were also instructed which specific players to do blood tests on due to co op from the accused dealers sucks for the kid hes from my area of the woods also i think this all went down last year as hes already served a year of his suspension
