I know most members here only care about having a certain look--regardless of the health implications. Yet I know there are those of us who know one can have a great physique and be healthy. I see lots of folks eating 300-500 carbs per day (or more), and these 50-100 grams of sugar post workout protocols. It's Detrimental to your health, and ironically, probably unnecessary for building muscle (that's for another debate, though)



Certainly you can tolerate small amounts if you are healthy and the majority of your diet is healthy, but let’s face it the average American is consuming over 150 pounds a year of sugar or nearly half a pound a day. Ideally your annual consumption should be well under ten pounds per YEAR.

Sugar increases your insulin and leptin levels and decreases receptor sensitivity of both these hormones. This can lead to a wide range of health problems, including weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, premature aging, and heart dissyntherolease.

Sugar suppresses your immune system, causing problems with allergies and digestive disorders. It can even bring on depression.

In addition to throwing off the body's homeostasis, excess sugar may result in a number of other significant consequences. The following is a listing of some of sugar's metabolic consequences from a variety of medical journals and other scientific publications.

Sugar can suppress your immune system and impair your defenses against infectious disease.1,2

Sugar upsets the mineral relationships in your body: causes chromium and copper deficiencies and interferes with absorption of calcium and magnesium. 3,4,5,6

Sugar can cause can cause a rapid rise of adrenaline, hyperactivity, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and crankiness in children.7,8

Sugar can produce a significant rise in total cholesterol, triglycerides and bad cholesterol and a decrease in good cholesterol.9,10,11,12

Sugar causes a loss of tissue elasticity and function.13

... My little engine generally runs far better on a protein/fat dominant diet but being afraid of jacking up your blood sugar levels when your muscles are glycogen depleted seems a bit silly to me.
 
Notice the "sugar can" wording. It may, it could, it might, on and on and on. I remember not too long ago research suggested that eggs were just evil. Eggs can do this eggs can do that. I cant think of too many other sources of protein that come close to the good ol egg. I love em. Boiled, scrambled or fried. I eat a lot of lean red meat as well !!! Why not just live life to the fullest and enjoy everything in moderation. A little isnt gonna kill you. Ive been utilizing the post workout carb load for a couple of months now and I must say that I notice a difference in muscle fullness. I feel pumped longer. That has to be good for growth.

You prove my point--your goal is to feel more pumped/have more fullness. I'm talking about overall health and longevity.

btw-- why does feeling pumped have to be good for growth? just curious on your opinion
 
Feeling pumped means that the muscles are full of blood. That is a no brainer. If the muscles are full of blood then it stands to reason that more nutrients are going to be shuttled into the muscle for recovery. At the same time a "pumped" muscle offers stretching of the fascia which allows for muscle growth and expansion of the capillaries. Simple sugars like dextrose post workout can cause an insulin spike which is also beneficial in shuttling nutrients into the worked muscles. Look, I am not here to argue with anybody. If you do not want to use sugar then dont. Its a free world. By not using sugar you realize that you cannot enjoy fruit, fruit juices, and a host of other goodies that are not only delicious but considered healthy by most people. I limit my carb intake and I do not use sugars in excess. I feel that the key to a proper diet is moderation. I think I would be a bit more concerned about the meats, vegetables and nuts that we are being sold at the local markets. How many recalls have we had this past year ? would you like some Salmonella with that no sugar diet ?

dextrose is not "sugar". Sugar, more accurately called SUCROSE, is dextrose:fructose and the vast majority of issues stem from fructose content (as the human body can only process a very limited amount of fructose per day). Fructose, and high fructose corn syrup are commonly used to induce diabetes in lab animals.


sugars (not "sugar") include dextrose, fructose, sucrose, maltose, lactose, galactose and a number of other less common combinations of the above.

Assuming that you are referring to Macros' post (you didn't directly address him), then I can only assume he's sort of insinuating that dextrose is safer than fructose & the big scary post by Dr.S doesn't really apply to dextrose in the same way.

I hope that's what he was getting at & I hope he's right. We gotta get some enjoyment outta life...
 
Its not Really about Sugar.

Well it is because Sugar and Insulin are interielated.

Its more about Insulin level.

The point should be That the Higher your Insulin Level is, The Faster you age and become insulin Resistant.

BLood Glucose will Always come down, Until you become a fullblown Diabete and not produce Insulin.


The Problem is when people Spike Insulin Too High and too Often, Thats when your health is injured.
 
My point to Dr.S is that using dextrose to provide an insulin spike post workout 4 times a week is not going to have serious side effects. I am concerned when people say that a study showed that a substance is unhealthy in lab rats when given a dose that far exceeds what any human being would ever ingest. They give those rats insane amounts to get results. Im pretty sure thats why every one of the illnesses that he lists is preceeded by "can". Sugar can, sugar may. In fact, if you look over his post you can see several refences to HIGH sugar intake. Sugar can be deadly if you eat 1lb a day for 10 years. I would probably buy into that theory. Sad thing is that when you read nutrition labels they merely refer to sugar as sugar. Not dextrose, sucrose, fructose, etc. Everything in moderation my friends. I do agree that Americans on average eat way too much sugar but trying to scare people on this forum isnt going to have much effect.

someone correct me if I am wrong
but blood sugar is a 6 carbon molecule,
sucrose is a 12 carbon molecule,
and all carbs after that are made of longer and longer chains of these 12, 24, 48, 96, etc. carbon chain building blocks.
The Glycemic Index refers to the speed with whitch the body can break them down into the 6 carbon currency we utilize for conversion to ATP (which is metabolized on the cellular level in the mitochondria via the citric acid, or Krebs, cycle)
Insulin is secreted when the levels of this 6 carbon molecule are too high and
dependent upon your muscles' state of depletion, is stored in the liver, stored as fat, OR carried directly to the depleted muscle stores.

Therefore it would be optimal for a bodybuilder to restore the depleted muscle stores with something that would be digested quickly for an insulin producing spike, whether they are sourced from sucrose or a more healthy alternative. Taking advantage of the insulin shuttle so to speak...

I personally like sweet potato or a low GI fruit....

I'm wondering whether "sugar" (whatever that is) is really so dangerous when used to replenish glycogen stores in healthy athletes?

As you said, lab rats on ridiculously high sugar diets & gym rats using relatively moderate doses of sugar may have differing results...

I hope DR.S gets back on here to clarify the nitty gritty details of his opinion...

(A bunch of studies done on lab rats & non athletes doesn't necessarilly prove too much. I went down his entire list of references & couldn't find even one reference including the word "athlete". Perhaps I missed one or two, but since athletes reasonable healthfully consume 3 times more protien than "healthy adults", I think there's gotta be more athlete specific studies done if anyone's gonna draw any solid conclusions here.)
