I was looking up guys from my era (mostly AAU) and area like Jeff King, Matt Dufresne and typed the 1989 NPC Teen nats in Google just for a chuckle. The videos were at the top of the hits.

I was 19, doing the teens, and placed just out of the running (6) in LHW due to being soft. We had nearly 20 in the class that year. It was my third show as a teen, second that year.
I think I was about 196. Maybe if I was a few pounds lighter...

Yeah i hate guys like you! Hahahahaha - seriously it's great to see that you have maintained and gotten bigger/better! Looks like you live a real healthy lifestyle. props dude - not easy to do. I wish I had been more diligent earlier in life, but it inspires me to see guys like you who continue to improve throughout their lives!

Thanks guys. At that time I was determined to go pro at some point. After that show I worked my way up to 242 off-season in preparation for a go at the men's classes.

Around that time though I was talking with Lou at ASN a lot and doing writing for American Muscle (interviewing Shawn Ray and Penny Price at the time). He had been following me for a while and I started working for him part-time. He wanted me to go up against Dennis Newman (yeah right) who he was working with a lot at the time. In the end it was ironic that the producer of a bodybuilding show and contest promoter talked me out of competing as a career. He wanted me to keep writing.

For me, it was advice well taken as I have never regretted not taking it further. I enjoy bodybuilding, but I'm not willing to make the personal life sacrifices anymore to compete seriously. Sacrilegious on PM, I know - but for me it was the right choice.
