I eat fruit twice a day I think the health benefits outweigh the sugar content and since I grew up in a household where my Mother was from Jamaica I eat a lot of fruit some people have never heard of or seen before.
I've tried to utilize fruit as a primary and pre-workout carb source and It doesn't hold up to rice or sweet potatoes. I would run out of energy halfway through my workout.
