Fuck i want to kill myself right now.....

Ok...for past 3-4 weeks ive felt some pain in my upper bicep tendon (right side) and the front of my shoulder when doing deads, nothing big, not enough to stop my workout and not enough for it to bother any other exercise, just a tweak. I also remember when i would lay down do to crunches, and lay a 10lb plate beside me, when i would reach my right arm across body to grab the plate i would get some of that pain in my shoulder.

I press, overhead press, bench press, lateral raises, everything all fine- as strong as ive ever been.

Finally my bi/shoulder got sore day after deadlifts, so i started to pay more attention to it. I got scared and now i think about it constantly, noticed it fucking clicks,,,like my shoulder clicks every time i move it, if i rotate my arm inward when im sticking it out, it fucking clicks :banghead:

Did research online, looks like I have a slap tear, from what I can gather. A fucking labrum tear, but I can press fine with no pain? And no pain working bi's or even no pain doing bent over rows, or back, just deads???

Jesus. The main reason i think its a slap tear is the clicking now, i can reach across my body fine, but i did do some tests i saw online like the obrien test, and i think i feel some pain when I do the obrien test.

I just started a cycle after cutting up for 20 weeks, and i hate to stop but i gess i have to.

What is the point in making gains if im going to just lose those gains when im out for 9 months? LOL.

That was a long rant, but i guess my question is, can you train though a SLAP tear if indeed that is what it is? I can press and do biceps and back and everything no pain, my chest workout saturday i was as strong as ever, 1 week after I started taking this seriousley.

I guess im asking if it doesnt affect my training and there is no pain should i really get surgery?

Of course im going to see a surgeon to get it properly diagnosed, but im just beside myself sitting here i dont know what to do other than make this thread i really want to smash something.

Anyone train though shoulder popping/slap/labrum tear? Or is it always surgery? :banghead:

why do you have to stop training? you can still hit legs and a lot of single arm work.... when you train one side of the body, the other side still benefits..

Just out of curiosity do you use an over under grip? double overhand? hook grip? Straps?

i had a slap tear come up on an mri in november of 09. i never stopped training, i still do heavy inclines and shoulder presses and continued to do so even right after i found it, the only thing i dont do anymore is flat barbell benches.

one problem here is that you have made an injury diagnosis and course of action re your training based on internet information.

i think you should seek proper medical advice from a PT or ART practioner etc

I had a slap tear scoped 10yrs ago...still was able to compete in the NPC & then play professional roller hockey after....after the recovery You'll get atleast 80% of Your strength back

has it gotten worse at all? so you have been training as usual since 09 with the tear? that is what i would like to do, what did the doc say about this did he say it will get worse? thanks.

if you dont work around it and let it heal completely then work your way back into lifting you are at much greater risk of making it worse

First I wouldnt jump to conclusions because now its on your mind constantly. I had a similar problem fought through the pain for a while finally got an MRI they called me said I had a slight tear in my rotator cuff when I went in to see the doctor he said it did not tear but it was weak and I should do some rehab work. Alot of stretching involved alot of full range movements.
If you cut up maybe your joints are a little dry. maybe try some Glucosamine.
and staying away from deads might help or just go alot lighter to the point there is no pain if its possible so your body gets use to the motion.

thanks for the replies everyone, im a little calmer today.

from what i have read a slap tear will never heal, it is the labrium (sp),,,unlike a muscle tear/strain there is no blood flow so once it is torn its torn.

i have a appt to see the ravens team doctor this week, he is supposed to be pretty good so ill talk with him and get an MRI.

i guess what im wondering,,,,if i opt against the surgery and continue to train (drop deads), will i still be able to make progress and put on size, get stronger, with this tear in my shoulder?

i guess the only way anyone would know if someone has trained with this injury in the past for many years, from everything ive read online people always advise to just get the surgery.

Will be interested to see how the MRI comes back. If there is no structural damage, then my guess would be it is a trigger point in one of the rotator cuff muscles, the supraspinatus. I have done this treatment on many clients that come to me for this sole purpose to get their shoulder to stop clicking. Once the trigger point is released there will be no more clicking in the joint, have had a great deal of success with this treatment. Keep us posted on what the results are and if everything comes back ok, you will deff want to take a look into this.

thanks for the reply animal. i saw the shoulder specialist and he said he said it could either be a slap tear or the bicep tendon popping out of the groove. he did not request an MRI (looking back this was stupid, im going to call him and get one this week), but he said my shoulder is stable and he doesnt want to operate, he says there is no gaurntee the surgery for a possible slap tear will make my shoulder any better than it is now. he said keep lifting, he doesnt think even if it is a slap tear training heavy will really make it any worse. he said if im in good shape and no pain, just keep training (he is the doc for the local NFL team).

so basically what i got from talking to him is this....

- keep training and let pain be my guide, if it hurts dont do it, if it doesnt then do it

- the surgery for slap tears isn't very good and he could make it worse

- my shoulder is stable he strongly does not suggest surgery

- when he operates on NFL guys for slap tears (he is the team doc so i know he isn't lying about working on NFL guys)....he tells them to never overhead press again, it is wayyyyyy too risky

- come back if it gets worse..

Im still pretty confused, gonna get a MRI to get a true diagnosis....

For the trigger points, who should I see for this, a chrio? He gave me the name of a good PT, he said i can work with this guy to correct my form and learn form that will not make this possible tear worse...

I spoke to the PT on the phone (visit him monday) he said he has 2 tears, and he still trains, he curls 55's still, has to change his training some,,,he says anything that brings the arm behind the plane of the body (dip, incline curls) are very bad for the labrum,,,he said something about zottoman (sp) curls and preacher curls are fine,,,prolly will try and strengthen my roator cuff i guess....

Should I see a chiro about the trigger points though? From what I googled i had guessed the clicking was a sure sign of a slap tear, didnt know it could be anything else...

One thing about the clicking, it didnt come right after i really aggrivated my shoulder/bicep doing the deads,,,it actually started after doing that beach towl thing that dante has used to help cure peoples shoulder problems (im not blaming dante or the exercise,,before someone says I am lol)..

But i did start doing those dislocations because I originally thought it was tendonitis,,,and then if i remember correctly i started getting the clicking, maybe I possibly impinged something?

After I treat all my clients who have any type of shoulder issues, I have them do the rope stretch that Dante also advocates, but it is only really effective if your shoulders are not medially rotated (which means your palms are facing backwards). The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint, and what happens with people who have tight pecs and biceps is that it rotates this ball and socket forward. When this happens, it makes it very easy for the medial biceps tendon to roll out of the groove laterally. Another way you can tell if your shoulders are rolled fwd is when you lay down, if your rear delts do not touch, and your palms are facing down. This is the case with many of people that I treat.

If I were you I would suggest you see a neuromuscular therapist who does trigger point therapy and myofascial release, so that they can release your pecs and roll your shoulders back. After they do that then they should be able to check to see if your biceps tendon is out, if it then they can put it back in the groove. After it is in the groove, you should be able to keep it in there as long as your shoulders do not roll fwd again. If there is still a slight clicking in the joint then you should have them treat your supraspinatus for trigger points. If it is released right there should be no clicking in the joint. Hope this helps.
