Every show I go to I see guys (and girls) with a "tan" than ranges from none to dark chocolate. It seems that the idea for some is the darker the better but some people get so dark then don't tam their face and look weird as hell. I think the idea is the darker you are the better you can see the muscles but I don't think that always the case.

Another thing is the glaze that some guys use , I personally hate that oiled look and think it can actually prevent you from seeing all the muscle seperation and grainyness from being shiney under the stage light.

I've seen people with very blotchy tan from either dry skin or just uneven application , I've seen people look like leppers because their sun burn is peeling.

Anyway , I've always wondered how much of a factor your tan plays in the judging.??
What's everyone thoughts on that.??

I get done the night before and every time I step onstage before I go out

So got done prejudging bodybuilding then prejudging classic, guy told me to shower in between then did before night show bodybuilding, then before night show classic

I think in the end it will depend on the judges. My wife did a show and she was darker than every other girl and she won it. That hasn’t always played a role in her shows. She had a pretty significant color difference.
I believe the skin prep also played a role in that.
i would agree with on the oiled look. You can definitely go overboard with that.

I was in the NPC Iowa on Nov 14.

I had a local friend spray me in KC Thursday evening, again Friday morning, and then I took Protan with me and just applied another 3 coats before jumping on stage, at that point the skin wasn't absorbing it, so it was likely closer to 3 and me just being overly worried about not being dark enough. They "glaze" you with Muscle Juice and do it for free anyways.

Either way, my tan held and was fine.

From a judging perspective (former judge) it sends a message that you didn't pay enough attention to details even if you think you did. If a show is close it may mean the nod doesn't go in your direction. The light might not reflect correctly and it could cost you. I think you need to figure out which of those colors work best for you depending on your skin and go with that. I always did my own tan instead of going with the various spray companies. It's not likely that they will be at every show and therefore you can't duplicate your results. Skin prep starts a few weeks out with at least exfoliating if not tanning . When someone neglects the tan it's like a corvette riding on a spare tire. Mix that over glazed look and blotchy/light tan and it's definitely going to come out in the judges feedback...or should.

There's a lot that goes into getting solid stage color, and it all starts with a solid skin care routine for at least 4 weeks out from the show. Exfoliating and moisturizing on a very regular basis really helps set your skin up to take the color more evenly. I also recommend a PH neutralizing wash so your tan doesn't go a funky shade of green or red after you apply it.

As for stage color; I've used and been tanned by all the different products, and I 100% believe Liquid Sun Rayz is the best. Usually I get 3 coats and I'm plenty dark for the stage, it has a very nice bronze color to it, and I've never had issues with it turning a weird shade on me after it's been applied.

Glaze can be hit or miss since a lot of shows it's the tanning sponsor doing the glaze backstage, so you're kind of at their mercy if they know what they're doing. Usually it's not an issue at the national level shows, though you do see guys completely forget to get glazed because they are managing their time poorly... And the over glazed guys are usually the ones not really in shape and asking for extra glaze to try and make things "pop" more.

The TL/DR version...exfoliate and moisturize, then use Liquid Sun Rayz, at least 3 coats. Err on the side of being darker. Also, tan your face.

The best color for me was when I had a decent base tan then use pro tan for maybe three coats, then jan tana competition tan to darken it up a bit. Seems kinda overkill but it was the best color I found after trial and error.. I learned the hard way about exfoliating if you dont want that nasty splotchy look.
