I've been a subscriber to SI magazine since I was 11 years old and I read the article today. I thought it was very interesting too, although some parts were a tad boring. I wished they would name the actual steroids they were talking about in certain excerpts.

that was my life for 4 years. i played minor league baseball. the scout who signed me "son, you're a great player....but ya gotta get bigger." that meant stick a needle in my ass. i went from a JR 170lb div1 college 3rd baseman, to a SENIOR 230lb div1 college short stop. needless to say i got bigger.

minors was a balst. the cleat chasers, strip clubs, bar fights, not sleeping....being zooted out on amphetamines. needed them cause we were so drunk night before. no responsibilites, no cares....gilrs, booze, and baseball...usually in that same order as well....

without steroids, there wouldn't be a MLB. people can be naysayers, but until you've seen what i've seen, you have no clue!

I only read the first page....but the caption of the pic says "Dan Naulty, now a pastor, overcame a vicious cycle of steroids, heavy drinking and suicidal thoughts to become one of the few players in the Mitchell Report to own up to PED use."

But of course steroids get the bad rap, not the alcohol. It seems like alot of deaths from steroids include a list of other substances that were abused, yet steroids always shine the brightest. I guess the fact that approximately 18 percent of alcoholics commit suicide doesn't matter.

We pay for the thrill and excitement of watching the game. Steroids obviously make the athlete perform better, so we get "more for our money"

taking the steroids to play the game i grew up and loved was only the tip of the iceburg. and many many ex-ball players are sitting in 12 step rooms just like me....it was a blast...until it became unmangable. my life, my thoughts, and i'm owning up to it being my responsibility

Would my EX friend do it all again? Well, he made about $7million dollars playing in the big leagues....

He also has two ex wives, currently married for the third time. 4 children in different parts of the country whom he never sees by choice, no job because all he ever knew was baseball...oh and the 7 million...gone--filed for bankruptcy a few yrs back

well ya see i never played in the bigs. made it up to AA. would rather not say who i played for, but the mascot wears a patch on his eye..


$7 million split between 2 ex'wives, and several children, and many frivelious purchases is easy to blow, especially if he was/is an active user (drinker, rec user). shit, my buddy josh smoked up $4.6 million signing bonus on crack...but now he is the best player in the MLB....ok, best left handed hitting outfielder.... the life on the road wasn't very appealing. long bus trips, fast food, strange cities. sometimes i'd be so drunk afte rtthe game to get on the bus, i'd forget where i was even going, let alone when i got there, sometimes i was an embarASSment to myself and others....i played the game i loved. the 1 thing my dad really gave me was the knowledge and ability to play baseball. he is 1 helluva man. my best friend. i have a ton of friends who still play. my ex college roommate was on the Red SOX 04 world series champion club...now owns a bunch or mercedes benz dealerships. i wouldn't trade it for the world...it made me who i am today.

Yes, I would like to hear more about Josh Hamilton. Do you think he still (assuming he did back then) juices? Has the amount of PED usage in MLB decreased since everything that went down with the mitchell report/bonds/mcguire/etc?

And this thread is now about you and your stories. I LOVEEEE hearing about this type of stuff since i am a sports maniac

Let's just say Canseco was right on with his percentages. That's why he is so hated by many pros--he ruined it. As for this stuff with Clemens going on...he was one of many names my friend told me that everyone knew used. Pitchers were the biggest culprit, but it was everywhere in the big leagues and everywhere in the minors.

The percentage of guys using has dropped dramatically! Canseco was pretty spot on, there were guys that didn't use, but a lot did. BUT, the use Canseco was talking about wasn't going on in th 80's or early 90's like he says, it was towards the end of the 90's early 2000's when it became rampant. Access became much easier, and the "selection" became greater. I played with the Cards and Brewers at the end of the "steroid era". Guys still used/use, but not nearly as many due to the hefty suspensions. Gotta realize guys, when suspended, you get no paycheck. So imagine going 2 months without a paycheck, not fun.

Look at the whole Alex Rodriguez and Roger Clemens stuff. The public fallout from that was enormous. Imagine is Kobe Bryant tested positive for PED's in the NBA? That would be the story of the year
