For everyone in California - maybe some of you guys can give me some advice!
Got pulled over this WE by a cop and he gave me a ticket for not wearing a seat belt. Now I thought he'd just give me a ticket - but he asked me to sign something and that ticket actually reads: "Notice to Appear!".
So when I got home I read that stupid thing more carefully on the backside and it talks about what you have to do now.
It says, if I pay it I admit my wrongdoing and it will be filed with the DMV and it will go on my driving record.
I mean, what the F***k for not wearing a seat belt!
And the other options are like going to court and contest it but still having to pay the bail amount and if I loose I also have to pay a fine etc.

You know, is the courtsystem in this country 24h busy with figuring out how to really fuck with somebody over little shit!?

So I wonder if any of you here in Cali ever had a case like that and how you handeled it!
thanks fellas! Bud

PS: I had some gear in the back - but thank good he didn't go there that PIG!

It just means to go to the court and pay the fine...It's prob. a window and/or desk...The option is to fight it but what are you going to win...I say go and pay and click it or ticket like the digital signs say over our freeways:D
Sucks, but whatchaya gon do

Congrats! You have officially been fucked! Hope it wasn't too bad.

Most Americans don't realize how fucked up the system is until shit like this actually happens to them.

Of course cops love to write tickets, it's a lot safer than kicking down the doors to the crack houses. Same with busting "steroid" dealers.... Usually they don't shoot back - unlike some crack/meth/etc...

Not to go off on my anti-establishment tantrums so I'll just say, get use to it - it'll get al ot worse before it gets better

Pay By Mail

All that signing the ticket means is that you will appear IF required. You should get a letter from DMV soon with a "bail amount" that if you pay, you will not have to go to court (this is same with most minor tickets- rolling through stop signs, minor speeding, etc.). The good news is I think it is no points on your license (but I don't think you can do "traffic school" for that, and your insurance company might see it at some point).

BUT if you do not get that mail before court date, do not ignore it or you will have a warrant for your arrest. NOT GOOD! Just deal with it.

BTW- Wear a seat belt!!!! I have been in many wrecks (totalled cars, rolls, etc) and the seat belt has saved me at least 3 times from going through the wndshield or getting thrown out of car. Hell, I'd put on a 5-point harness and make my passenger do the same here in Los Angeles.

Don't worry, it could be a lot worse for you.

I'm about 99.9% sure you are reading the ticket wrong or not understanding it fully. Most tickets that are given for things that don't carry points have a bunch of options. One of which is pay the ticket but not admit fault. There is a box for that at the bottom of the ticket, at least in Arizona there is. You can also take it to court and that would be pointless unless you know for sure that the cop won't show. You have like a million options and it's just a seat belt ticket anyway. Unless you are the worst driver with a history of bad driving this isnt going to do much including much to your insurance....or it shouldnt do much I should say. I have had two tickets for speeding in the last 3 years and my insurance has not gone up at all and as a matter of fact it went down because the policy just renewed. Don't sweat it....I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

When I call home and tell my family shit like this they don't believe me...
Still trying to understand why this country is self proclaimed "Land of the Free".
Freedom to what? Work like a dog and go home watch TV?
Jeez...

Most of the time i think the fine is like $25 for a first offense if you pay by mail. the DMV doesn't care about a seatbelt ticket it doesn't count as a point or anything. Just chalk it up as a donation to the beautiful and ever sunny state of california.

Don't feel to bad, I just got my 5th parking ticket in LA for parking on a street that was being sweeped that day. There goes another $47 down the drain.

MJ

I got a parking ticket across the street from the American Red Cross in DC. I was there to make a presentation for free! In other words, I donated my time. Turns out where I parked, between like 3pm and 5pm is a rush hour zone...

100 bucks!!!! That's a gold mine! Plus, here in DC, if you don't pay in the specified amount of time it doubles no matter what it's for so I ended up paying them 200 bucks...

basically for

1. being a dumbass
2. waiting to long to pay
3. trying to do something for a good cause

I still do things for charity but my poor lil' anus still hurts! Welcome to America

thank you guys for all your comments - totally appreciate it!

Yeah I know I am probably making a big deal out of it but some of you said it just like I felt it - this is a fucked up system nevertheless.
And when reading that ticket on the back and they are talking about jail sentencing and arrest warrant...and all that for not wearing a seat belt once....I mean, what the fuck....they got it all figured out to the last bit how to fuck up your life in case you don't "OBEY"!

Best part, I was with friends at the Santa Monica College the night before and they had there the annual "Celebrate America" firework.
And when they were rolling the firework, which was by the way aswesome - they were playing music in the background to make it more patriotic and then they played this song..."and the flag still stands for freedom and they can't take that away...and I am proud to be an american, cause at least I know I am free..."
So SUN when I got that ticket, I heard this lyrics over and over in my head..."at least I know I am free"....yeah right, free as long as I can pay for that freedom!

And this hypocracy pisses me off! Especially here in L.A. where the news doesn't stop talking about LAPD officers shooting a man down over nothing, covering up for each other etc.!
I mean ever realized their litterly obnoxious presence!
The other day I am with some older friends at the opening of a new dog park by the Santa Monica airport - families with kids and dogs - who is there standing around all armed up making you understand that they are watching your every step - LAPD.
You go on the WE to the beach, it's a sunny day, you are in a good mood - who do you see again - Big brother making sure you are behalving.

BTW ALLEX you really said that well: work your ass of and go home watch TV and be a good citizen - never question anything!

thanks again guys - bud!

I just dont understand why people dont wear seat belts. They do save lives, saved mine once when I flipped my car on the highway. Some dont wear them because they say that it is their right to not wear it if they want to, after all its their life they are risking and not someone elses. Thing is, what happens if you do get in a bad accident and end up in the hospital for several months or more!? Much of this country is uninsured or underinsured with medical insurance. In these cases much of the time the hospital ends up picking up the tab and passing it off to all of the other paying customers. It is attitudes like these that raise our health insurance rates. I compare it to idiots that insist on smoking cigarettes all their lives, and then end up with health problems later on. This lifestyle raises health care costs.

I am not touting with my post that I should have the right to wear my seat belt or not if I wish to do so!
I flat out just forgot in the heist of the moment to put it on since the ride to my friends house was just a short distance.
I totally agree that lives are beeing put at risk if seat belts aren't beeing worn!

The point of my post is that the system for punishment in this country is
better thought out and organized than for example coming up with a plan on how to make healthcare and education effordable for everyone.
It is a bigger priority of the court-systems to punish someone real good, rather than putting efforts in preventive work. - but then they wouldn't make much money and that's not in their interest either!

and the over and over repeating newscasts of policecurroption within the LAPD etc. aren't making me a friend of PIGS either! - bud

it is such a habit for me to wear a seatbelt that I feel naked without it.

Maldorf, I agree with you 100% ! It is now required by law in the state of Maine to wear seat belts and they are checking everyone as well. Like others mentioned once you get used to it you notice something is missing if you don't buckle up.

So how exactly do you get caught not wearing a seatbelt? I would think it's really hard to tell that a car flying by with tented windows if they have their seatbelt on or not. The only way I can think of if some cop rolls up right next to you at a redlight with both your windows down, but even then I would think that it would be kinda hard to see into the car to actually tell.

I don't believe in seat belt laws, helmet laws or any other law that protects man from himself. Laws originally were made to protect man from another man. That is where it should end.
Now our socialist govt. decides what is best for you because you are too stupid to determine yourself.
OK, my rant is done.

OK!

I once had a "notice to appear" ticket when I lived in SD, CAL... I pleaded No contest and ask the judge for driving school... its worth it. You'll pay fine but it wont enter you diary book/ dmv record or police record.. it gets pardon.

no, socialist is when someone gets burned by a hot cup of coffee and sueing the business that served it to them because they did not know it was going to be that hot.
Laws are made because common sense doesn't exist.
In my whole life dealing with car accidents, I have seen nothing good come out of someone not buckling up. all this stuff I hear about it being safer without is just urban legends, hearsay or dumb luck.

I feel naked without my seatbelt on now too. I think it's a good idea to wear them. But, too bad big brother has to get involved.

They just passed the new seatbelt pullover law in MN. They've been advertising it enough so I think most people get it. Still see on the news though, people crashing and getting ejected from vehicles and getting splattered.

It's a stupid ticket. You just pay the fine. I really doubt it affects anything unless you start to get pulled over all the time. Good thing they did'nt search your vehicle or you did'nt give them a reason to. The seatbelt law could be used as probable cause what have you to search a vehicle.

In MN you can talk to people to get a plea bargain. They don't want some minor offense like that going to court. If it's the 1st one they could drop it after a year or throw some other deal your way.

Good old ca cops..Listen here's how to beat it as I just did back in feb...Find you a mechanic that you know and have him write you a receit for installing a new drivers side seat belt..Then go to court and plead guilty with an explanation...Tell the judge that you took a trip to your parents house for the weekend..On Sunday you took your parents to breakfast..When you arrived you started to unfasten your seatbelt and it was stuck..You dad tried to get it un-done but to no avail..So he went inside the restaurant borrowed a knife and you guys cut the seat belt so you could get out...On mon (or whatever the day the ticket was written) you drove back home and thats when you got the ticket..you tried to explain to the officer and he said explain it to the judge..Then hand the judge a receit for a new seatbelt and he will dismiss the ticket..
