i have now managed to source grass fed ground beef from a farm shop thats reasonably priced.

my question is that when cooked up it is not particularly lean. however am i right in saying that if i drain off the excess the fat thats left is good fat anyway??

i would equate it to about 85% stuff

It's ALL good fat. If you want to cut calories just eat less of everything. Throwing away the fat is like throwing away money.

Fat from beef would not be considered "good" fat. Omega 3 is a much better choice.

You might want to do some reading my friend. Start with Eat Wild.

We are talking about grass fed meats...

As for the question..I would probably let the fat drain..not because I think you will fall over from a heart attack, but because there is a good enough amount of fat still in the meat..

Grass Fed..

Aloha Bruthas',

Grass fed beef, with no grains to fatten them up, fully raised on the range has more Omega 3 and CLA. Good fat all the way...

One better is buffalo. More protein, Omega 3, CLA and less fat.

yeah, i would consider it all good fats, like the man from hawaii said, only better is bison, yet can be expensive if your not close to the source. good choice my friend

Thought I might add. Did you know grass fed beef has:

■Up to 60% more Omega 3 than grain fed beef?
■3 times as much Vitamin E than grain fed beef?
■Twice as much Vitamin A (beta-carotene ) than grain fed beef ?

A number of studies show that exclusively grass fed beef has an enhanced Omega 3 content up to 60% more than grain fed beef. (Most people think the only source of Omega 3 is fish.) Omega 3 is essential for health and cannot be manufactured by the body. Additionally, there is a more favourable Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio, improving the proportion of healthy fats in our diet.Grass fed beef contains three times more Vitamin E than grain fed beef. Vitamin E is a powerful anti-oxidant and is most beneficial when consumed as food.Beta-carotene is a critical fat-soluble vitamin, necessary for maintaining a healthy immune system, good vision and growth. Grass fed beef supplies twice the amount of Vitamin A as grain fed beef.

Wholefoods All Natural Beef

This is grass fed for the 1st 2/3rds of its life then grain fed for the last 3rd. It is 1/3 of the price of all grass fed. Just wanted to get others opinions on this. Not sure how long its life is.
Thanks

I think people also mistake water for fat. Some cuts of ground beef will give you more water than others. There is fat, water, and the two mixed together...

It only takes a few weeks for the lipid profile of the steer to shift to unhealthy once it gets on the grain. Stick with the grass finished beef if health is a concern to you.

It is $$

The All Natural Beef mentioned they have 2+lb packages of Top Serloin for $4.99lb compared to almost $20 for the all grass fed. I'll continue to look for a better (less expensive) source.

I love the grass fed beef but it is expensive. Usually a few of my buddies and I will go in and buy a whole cow from a rancher. Its an a** ton of beef but with 3 or 4 guys splitting the cost is right.

Exactly.

There are charts showing how CLA and Omega 3 diminishes as time in feedlot progresses on Eat Wild
